Tacoma Cluster (mech. dial vs. digi dial) and Transmission options

I am planning an engine swap in my 2003 Toyota Tacoma 4x4, 2.7L 5spd, XtraCab, SR5.

The truck is not lifted. I don't have plans to lift unless there are problems with the oil pan up front.

How does the digital odometer receive miles traveled? Is it exclusively from the electronic speed sensor and stored on a microchip in the cluster? Or is the signal received and stored in the ECU?

If the signal is stored and received in the ECU, what other clusters are available for Tacoma's? Was there a mechanical odometer version that will fit in the 2003 dash? What options for monitoring gauges does it have?

Also, I am thinking about my transmission and transfer case. The adapter kit I choose will be determined by a W series or R series bellhousing.

I like the 5th gear ratio and strength of the R154 transmission. If I had access to a R150 transmission and appropriate rebuild kit, would it be possible to migrate the 5th gear from the R154 and have a 23-spline output shaft?

I'm also considering while I'm at it, installing a dual transfercase and a twinstick on the rear. But again, the front xfercase would be determined by the transmission and output shaft.

Are there any DIY plans for making a geardriven lefty flip geardrive case? What about for the 2nd xfercase? Can that be 23-spline and gear driven? Or at least upgraded to 23 spline?

After the engine transplant and the truck has been on the road, I'll consider an e-locker in the rear as funding catches up.

I know the 2003 V6 Tacoma has a tow rating of 6K or 6.5K lbs (10K GCVW). The engine that will be going in will have slightly more hp/ft. lbs than the V6 engine in tacoma's.

Other than engine/transmission, are there differences in the brakes or driveshafts? Or is the 6K tow rating exclusively a result of engine/transmission and final drive gearing?

This truck is my daily driver and I put about 40K miles / year on it. But I also tow on occasion, but the 2.7L struggles and hill starts involve 4-Lo to get moving.

I'm doing research/searching here and on Pirate4x4 about dual cases. Hopefully there are plans with CAD files for making up the adapter/sandwich plates.

Thanks,

~ryan
