Taco regearing

Im thinking about regearing my Taco a few weeks after christmas and wanted some input. I have a 99, 2.7l, 4wd, 5spd, with 33x10.50's. i checked my axle ratio's buy the door jam codes and im pretty sure i have 3.90's currently(i think my truck came from the factory with 225's on it yuck). since i put the 33's on fifth gear has become pretty much useless except for long flat highway stretches, and my gas has gone from 290 miles per tank to 210 if im lucky. I want to get 4.88's for my truck but have never had this done before, and was wondering which gears are best, which install kits do i need. and how much to expect for an install price. Also does this sound like a good thing for me to do or do some of you regret doing this. any and all input will be appreciated.

Although gearing can be universal, your application is tacoma specific so let's move this to the tacoma section

See my truck specs. Best money I ever spent was gearing.

did you get better gas mileage after regearing.

Never really checked MPG before the gearing (of course, gas used to be affordable) but I'm getting 20-22 MPG now. That's about half city, half highway. Great power, use 5th all of the time. If I was going 33's it would be a toss-up between 4:56 and 4:88's.

gears

i would also recommend 4:88 i have a v6 with 33s and had 4:10 and put 4:88 it was the best thing for power i could have done before the swap i had no fifth gear and now i can accelerate from about 60mph going up hill in fifth gear just fine

i have a 2000 2.7 xtra cab 5 spd and it came with 4.30 and i step it up to 4.56 with 33 x10.50 boggers i average around 18-20 mpg when i change back to bfg at for daily driving i go back to 22-25 mpg
