Swap 1998 4Runner Radio Bezel with 1999 Bezel

I just recently completed the cup holder Mod on my 1998 4Runner. I now have a radio bezel from a 2000 4Runner that I would like to install. User blarchitect had a thread that described the steps in detail. He has now sold his 4Runner and deleted all the information for this Mod here..

I searched the forums and couldn't find any other writeups. has anyone attempted this Mod? I'm looking for information to make this a smooth swap.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Trying to do the same thing myself. I can only find crap writeups now that the other guy deleted all his stuff. Sucks.

A wiring diagram for a 99+ 4Runner would be a great way to see how the defrost and ETC switch are controlled on the later trucks. From what I gather it's not in the actual buttons in the bezel.

found THIS

i think i remember Ritzy4runner either doing this or being in the process of doing this mod so you might PM him. or, PM blarchitect if he is still on here. quite a shame that the pics and diagrams are gone, i remember seeing them and it made it look so easy after he dissected everything and laid it out nicely.

I tried emailing blarchitect directly. I hope he's just on vacation or something like that, but I just don't understand why he deleted the writeup. Judging from the comments, it seemed precisely what I was looking for. Thanks for the link above. It's a start in the right direction, but I don't know if it's enough for me to go to the point of no return after cutting wires an breaking open switches.

I do have the wires rerouted behind the stereo, so far.

That's the link that pattycakes77 posted above. Again, I don't know if this will be enough. It only talks about the defroster switch and not in detail enough. He shows the defroster switch plugged in in, yet inside it has to be soldered with seperate wires coming in through drilled holes. I also have the window switch, hazard and ECT button to contend with as well

In the meantime any complete info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I PM'ed blarchitect a while ago and never heard back from him. It leads me to believe he isn't on the boards anymore.

Unhappy

Deleting the write up because you sold your 4Runner is not Cool. I usually don't wish bad things upon anyone, but I hope he ended up with a Ford or something like that.

that's really too bad, it was a treasure trove of information. he bugged everything and even had where to put each pin, it was a clean install. let's hope that the internet ate all the info and pics and one day it will digest and regurgitate it back to the masses at yotatech!

no new info from me, wish i could help you but that stuff was way over my head!

Back from working in Georgia (thank God) and I too was following blarchitect's install. I think I actually printed out the pages he had done but I can't find them AND my copy of the wiring diagrams book for my 98 is missing ... blasted gremlins! Anyway I think I may have downloaded the Toyota site wiring diagrams for the 2000 so I will be trying to delve into this in the near future as well. I picked up a second '99 bezel so that I can have one to tinker with an not destroy my 98 until I'm ready to do the swap. Most of you on here know I try to do a decent write up when I do a project so I will post it when it happens. Might be awhile with winter setting in here, my garage is full of stuff so the Runner sits in the weather!

Still working on this project. I found some of the pages from Barchitech's write up I printed out the day it hit the boards but missing some pages. I am looking to try to figure out the wiring this winter and hopefully can get this done for posting in thenear future. There was a link on here somewhere for a website where you can download any toyota vehicle's FSM. I think it was a Toyota site and the fee is like $10 for a single day and you can download as many as you can during that 24 hour time frame. Worth checking into.

Ritzy,

I just downloaded a full FSM with wiring diagram from:
http://rapidshare.com/files/34004224...6.2002.SIL.rar
(select 'Free User', extract file and open up contents.htm)
(BTW I got this from the TTORA site, it's not a virus or malware crap!)

Even though it says 1996 to 2002, it seems like it's more for 99-02 models (all the parts drawings I've viewed are of the later model.) This might be perfect for you since the wiring diagrams you need are of the later models!

I don't know how computer saavy you are, but you're going to need a program like uTorrent to download the file, once it's downloaded you'll need a program like 7Zip to uncompress the file, then you'll need another program like PowerISO to read and copy files out of the main file, and finally, you'll need Adobe Acrobat to view the individual drawings.

PM me if you have any questions!

Ritzy

I'm in Canada, the toyota TIS doesn'y allow billing addresses outside the U.S. to download any FSM's.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Jayota,

Um...I posted a link to a full FSM with wiring diagram. Getting it involves a little bit of work, but it is FULLY worth it.

Screenshot of ONE of the wiring diagrams:

Yes I downloaded that one. I also need the 1998 FSM for cross-referencing and I can only find it in Russian.
