Yes yes I'm reviving an old thread. Better to revive than to create.
SoCalPaul,
I just bought a Subaru compass gauge pack and tried to install it in my 95 4runner. One reason I bought it was the ease of installation that you mentioned in this thread.
However, I'm wondering if my gauge pack is different from yours, as mine has no screw holes on the sides for mounting under the stereo. Did your gauge pack actually have pre-drilled holes? Where they metal and threaded?
Other than the bolting in of the unit, which I still need to do, I'd say it fits and looks great in place of the storage pocket I had there before. I'm going to order a temp sensor now that I know the unit works. I have attached a few pix of the unit taken during my test fit, and a couple of the side of the unit, showing no actual holes. There are partial indentations, but they are plastic and have no threads. One on each side lines up with a screw hole on the Toyota bracket.
Suggestions?

O.K. here's some installed pics. I didn't take pics during installation (sorry) but anyone that can install a radio shouldn't have any trouble. The unit is a single din & screws into the factory bracket with no modifications.
The wiring is straightforward & the unit is marked by the wiring harness. Battery, ignition, illumination & ground. The speed sensor is optional. I still need to get a temperature sensor.Paul

Mine is green - luck of the draw maybe. Likely the difference in the part #'s.
Agree finding them on ebay is tricky - they aren't titled as you'd expect. I finally found mine buried in ~ 50 other items for a "Subaru Compass"
I ended up using some screws I had and went into the plastic, no harm to the electronics - however the screws may have touched a magnetic screwdriver a few too many times, I have to calibrate the compass frequently (once ~ 6 months or so) - North is always to the right.... which means one of the screws is a bit magnetic. I haven't looked into aluminum or some other non-ferrous screw to use. If you can - probably worth it....

So I just got my rig back on the road after months of it sitting on "pit row." It turns out the Subaru unit does not need to be bolted/screwed in. Once I put the dash back together, the radio cage held it in there tightly, as the factory prongs line up perfectly with the unit's side indentations. There is ZERO movement when operating the buttons or when hitting a pothole. It is a solid piece of the dash.
Programming the unit was a snap, per the instructions posted in this thread. It works great, and the direction indicator changes almost instantly as you turn. The barometer and altimeter are quite accurate (the barometer is spot on, and the altimeter measures in 20 ft increments, which is good enough for me). Now, to order a temp sensor...
I highly recommend this mod!

Temp sensor installed. The sensor and wiring harness cost $43.00 from Subaru.
The tranny radiator bolt fit the sensor housing perfectly and does not appear to affect the temp reading, even when idling.
Fully-functional unit:

Nice find. I looked last night on my phone and didn't see one. Pretty steep, but at least it shows what year of Subaru to start searching for on CL and junkyards.

Still interesting to me, just like a museum. I actually had one of these units in a subaru forester that I once owned. It may seem useless but I miss it. It was surprisingly useful. It did have one completely useless feature, It would show you that you moving. Now that's useless, i think I would know if i was moving! I wish I had one again though. I never knew that they came in yotas.

I love people who think they are cooler than everyone else. Smh.
Guess we should stop lifting rigs. They have been doing it for more than 4 years.

I just picked one up for my 92 truck. I'll be sitting at the door waiting for the mail.
Just throwing out a reminder of one of the rules;
20. The "Spirit Of The Rules"
Due to certain activities over the past few months in the forum the mods feel that the following addition to the rules is necessary.
"The spirit of the rules"
The "spirit" of the rules is difficult to describe in "black letter" law because it is fluid and context based, for example everyone knows the difference between a picture that is just sexy [PG-13] and one that is pornography but the legal definition changes depending on where you are making it difficult to define.
Yet most everyone has a similar "standard" for what is and is not acceptable.
There are some activities that may not violate the rules as listed but can be termed as violating the "spirit" of the rules because by their nature they make this forum and/or the off-road community in general less enjoyable to be a part of.
Everyone knows what breaking the "spirit" of the law looks like, even if they can't describe it. If you partake in douchebaggery, or act like a toolshed or jackwagon, you'll get an automatic infraction or repeat offenders banned. Because this new rule is meant to cover the 'grey areas' a ban would only be instated as a last resort with the agreement of a majority of the mods.
