Steering rack questions -inner tie rod

What my arrows point to? What does that nut do? and the shaft that the inner tie rod end connects to, is it possible to change it out? i believe mine is loose. would it be easier just to change out the shaft or to change out the steering rack itself? this is a diagram from a t100, but if somebody can find a better more exploded view of a 4runner, that would be very helpful

Thanks in advance for the help!

I've never seen that part on a 3rd gen - it looks like a mix between a tie-rod and a steering damper....

Yeah, i know its the inner tie rod end. I just replaced both thinking they were my problem, not true. I was wondering what they connect to? There is a rod thats sticking out that you screw them onto. My question is can this be replaced? If you want a better pic just ask ill take an actual picture of what im talking about

Oh and fink, no offense, but you must not have looked underneath a 3rd gen 4runner lol

pretty sure that's the actual steering rack. it's toothed, and runs the length of the rack's housing. here's another (4runner) picture...

If the inner actual rack is moving then your rack is shot, more likely the internal bushings and seals. You could rebuild a rack, however it will be cheaper and easier to replace it.
As for the inverted nut, it is the rack guide and from what I have read before you can use it to tighten the rack up. Here are the torque specs; http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1996/SIL/...r/psg/reas.pdf
Just watch for the beginning of leaks from the inner rack,.
