Starter Problems
Hey guys im sure there are quite a few post here about the problem im just starting to have, but every case is different, I have a 96 Limited T4R 4WD with 135,000miles, ive noticed that about a week ago when i get in and turn the ignition it clicks once, then its starts after the second try, but then yesterday i had to turn the ignition about 2 min clicking before it finally started, i have had the truck for only about a month, so i havent really gotten into it, but what is causing the clicking? is my starter going bad, or is it something else? what can i do to either save it or save my self a headache later on......... Thanks

Your contacts are worn. Pull the starter and replace the two starter contacts. They tend to wear unevenly so one side will have a big groove and the other will not. The replacement OEM set was about $22, but beats buying a new or reman starter.
I had the exact issues about a month ago and I replaced mine and all is well. |
KrashDH is right. It's better to replace the contacts on your OEM starter. Aftermarket starters are generally crap compared to your stock one.

Used re-man Toyota starters are good. I mean "aftermarket" as in other brands like Autozone or Kragen brand starters. Those suck compared to new or rebuilt Toyota starters.

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/p...-issue-184572/ If you scroll down I took a pic of the orientation to get the starter out (for a Tacoma) and the actual worn contacts. Hope this helps a bit. |
