Starter/cost/difficulty to install

So i believe that I'm losing my starter. Every once in a while when i turn the ignition it will just click, then finally catch and it will start. My question is how much will a starter run me, and how difficult is it to install myself.
Thanks,
Jacob

Here's a write up on replacing the starter

Or you could try just replacing the contacts

Seriously consider replacing the contacts. They cost me $14.00

A new starter for my '99 was around $295.00

It was kind of a pain, but only took me a little more than one hour.

Toyota's starters are way over engineered (like most items) so the starter itself has roller bearings and is very sturdy... Get the contacts.. I would expect it to last pretty darn close to forever..

cool deal... i heard it was a royal PITA though... at what mileage are you guys seeing contact issues?

my starter lasted 160k at that point it it did the sometimes start sometimes not start thing when I took it in to get it tested you could hear sand and gunk grinding in it

I just replaced mine twice in the past week. First time I used a starter from the local auto part shop. It failed after 3-days. I got my $$$ back, however I lost my core as it was already collected. I bought an OEM unit and am good to go. I will say the Toyota starter was actually larger and more of a HD unit compared to the junk I got from Advanced Auto Parts. Save yourself the time and energy and just go OEM. I picked up mine locally after buying it online...it was right at $200.00.
