squeeling engine...

ok so my engine squeel's (if thats how you spell it) only when i move. if i just rev the engine it doesnt make the sound but as soon as i move it picks up and gets faster as i go then when i shift it starts slow again. i got the whole tune up done at 137k and i'm at 149 now so i dont think it would be anything to do with that... any ideas
thanks
bobby

What tranny?

From what you describe it doesn't seem like it would be a belt... but have you made sure they are all tight anyway?

YotaFun Jan 13, 2008 04:42 PM

Do you have a manual or auto?

4Runner202020 Jan 13, 2008 04:56 PM

manual and no i have not tested to see if they are tight

I'd make sure the belts are in check. I have heard some weird noises come from them. It would be a lot easier to fix than do something with the tranny.

4Runner202020 Jan 13, 2008 05:33 PM

what could it be in the tranny. it sounds like its coming from the back of the egine. like towards the cab...

Elvota Jan 13, 2008 05:49 PM

Pilot bearing perhaps...?

How old is the clutch?

infiltrator Jan 13, 2008 05:56 PM

sounds to me like its your u-joints. any vibration?

ciscojay Jan 13, 2008 06:10 PM

I had a bad rear diff a while ago, had a horrid squeal whenever I moved. You could hear it mostly at city cruising speeds (25-45mph). On the highway it seemed like it went away but I just think you couldn't hear it over the cab noise. It ended up being a bad rear diff pinion bearing I believe. Luckily this happened 400 miles (!!!) before the warranty was out and had the dealership fix it for free. Boy I had to fight for them to fix that one. They were crying abuse/lack of maintenance...good thing I keep my maintenance records.

4Runner202020 Jan 13, 2008 06:51 PM

i can only hear it when i accelerate and there is no vibration so i donno if that rules out the u joints and or the rear diff. any thoughts

4Runner202020 Jan 13, 2008 06:56 PM

and i got the cluch replaced about a year and some months ago... i have no clue.

ciscojay Jan 13, 2008 08:06 PM

Sounds like it mainly happens when there is load on the drivetrain...could be a number of things. You'll have to isolate where it's coming from. I actually had some buddies drive next to me with their windows rolled down and sourced it that way.

Not to point out the obvious, but it could even be your brakes telling you they need to be changed...just a thought!

4Runner202020 Jan 14, 2008 09:04 AM

could it be the brakes considering its only when i give it gas while in gear acelerating? thats what i thought at first but then i ruled it out.

Put it up on 4 quality jack-stands SAFELY.....make sure it does not move when you shove on it real good, start it and get under there whilst its in gear runnin.

We can only guess on a NG without actually hearing it.
