Speaker wiring: big deal?

I know this should go in the electronics thread, but my "desperate for radio help" thread has barely gotten 20 views.

There is some wiring problem between my HU(aftermarket) and speakers(aftermarket). First the driver front was going in and out, and I would just wiggle the HU and get it back. Two days later now, I am down to ONLY my rear driver door working, with the front pass going on occasionally.

This problem was starting BEFORE I put a new HU and speakers in, which is why I thought I needed them.

Circuit city says they will re-wire it with speaker wire directly to the speakers for 75$. I will have them do it if I must, but it's a last resort. I really hate it when those guys start ripping internals out like its trash, and finding something broken when they're done.

Please guys, I don't know what to do without music in my ride. There is only 2 hours daylight left.

Buy some speaker wire. Follow the wire as best you can from the HU to the speakers and either fix where its has the short or replace all the wire. You might have to remove some stuff to do this but its your only option, besides getting it rewired professionally. You also might want to check your ground wire, and make sure it is grounded correctly, as this can also cause your radio to short out. I'd also check elsewhere and price a rewire.

Well, here is an update. I pulled everything apart, and I started wiggling harnesses until I found out which one was bad, then cut out the harness and crimping the wires together. This took about 2 hours and was a PITA. After I plugged the HU back in, I had the same problem. Turns out that it was the harness right above that one that is bad LOL. So now I'm off to take that harness out, and we will then see it it works!

If your there already get bigger wires and rerun them for better quility sound can't hurt and you will know that its done right the first time and won't have to worry about happening again down the road. Hell I did 4 sets of componets 2 10s an amp a cap 4 fans and a head unit and it onlt took about 4 hours but I have had 1000 times that in enjoyment from it since.

Good job on doing it yourself, good luck, and hope that next harness does it for you. Let us know and keep us updated.

Just got done! I threw out harness #2 and wired it myself. Once I put it all back together, I realized that the RCA ports in the back labeled "bus in" will not second as "aux". So I had to take it all back apart, and switch the RCA~3.5mm for a 3.5mm~3.5mm . Everything is OK now exept for one thing, which ended up for the better. The antenna gets signal, but doesn't try to go up when I turn to FM. This helps now because my antenna is broken, so before I just had to listen to the motor grind.

I am super pumped on doing it myself! Before the 4runner, I would have never attempted that, just paid someone to do it.

I would love to tackle speaker wires and larger rear speakers some other time. Right now I have too much other stuff that is a little more important, such as the tundra brake upgrade, which will be starting this weekend. I also want to get lifted, and get OBA for a train horn. I am also still procrastinating on getting my driver mud flap.

My main dash trim piece was already cracked, and tonight I broke one of the clips for the bottoms piece right where it meets the console. On a good nite, I finally took the time to run the sirius antenna through the molding to the rear, which looks 305824958729 times better than before.
