Should I go to 35's !?

Hey I have a opportunity to get some used BFG mudders (315/75/16) for cheap.

I think with my 8" of lift I'll be able to clear them no problem... And, they will fill out the wheel well more nicely.

The only reason I dont want to get them is that I will not be able to afford a re-gear anytime soon. I mean, I'll have to eat top ramen for the next 6 months and ride my bike around town to save up.

I have the 4.30's factory gears right now...

I've heard of issues with the rack and pinion failing as well as broken front CV's but I dont have a heavy pedal... I drive slow around town and I wont be offroading on rocks.

What do you guys think?

marko3xl3 12-14-2005 08:56 PM

I'd wait until you get enough money to do even more stuff...re-gear, SAS etc. etc.

35"'s will just put more stress on your drivetrain for no reason. Also, is it worth wasting tight money just to have your truck look bling? There is barely anywhere where you need 35" to off-road without rocks, if that made sense.

Good Times 12-14-2005 09:17 PM

1. regear as I don't think you'll be a happy camper w/ those 4.30's. I'd say 4.88's would definitely make it more enjoyable to drive.
2. keep a few spare half shafts for good measure.
3. enjoy the ride!

Good luck

Isn't this pretty much what everyone on this message board does? I know I fall into this category. :great:

But you actually use whatever you have on your truck for the purpose. He said he won't be rock crawling, yet he wants 35's...I dunno. I do fall into that category somewhat, I wasn't trying to belittle him, but I am still not surviving on Ramen :P

BajaRunner 12-14-2005 10:48 PM

If I were to crawl rocks, Id have a 1st gen straight axle POS or something. This is my DD and baja expedition truck ;)

Fink 12-14-2005 10:56 PM

It would definitely look better I would just hate for something to break...you have a sweet rig as it is...I have not researched it personally but I would make sure there is no risk of anything else breaking and then weigh your decision based on that.

Just my $.02,

Fink:devil:

The wear and tear would be a bigger issue for me than would be the gearing. I run 33" muds on 3.90s... it's not fun, never confuse it for a race car, but it's fine for daily driving. You'd be running 35s with 4.30s - I would think that would be similar in feel to my setup, perhaps even a bit better. I think people on the boards get to hung up on gearing for day to day driving.

If you can fix stuff yourself and have the time/money to do so, then I say go for it. If you'd have to have the shop/dealer fix things anytime something broke, then I'd say stick with where you are. The expense/hastle of having the rig in the shop more frequently would suck.

Intrepid 12-15-2005 04:04 AM

I say get them, when will you run across another opportunity to get them cheap? Just put them aside for now and save up for better gears. Also, in regards to your 1st gen POS comment...I pity the fool that calls my 1st gen a POS! :mrt:

ErikJeanna, Speak for yourself on the bling comment, or at least, speak for yourself and Lee...

ebelen1 12-15-2005 06:05 AM

Isn't the stress on your drivetrain more related to the rock crawling and heavy pedal? If so and you don't do these things, do it. Your truck would look massive.

Intrepid, I'm sure your truck is a great offroader but like Erik, I'm into the bling. I'm pretty sure the jab at Lee was just that, a jab. He's posted a ton of pics of his truck going off-road on this board. Just cuz his truck is super clean, don't HATE!!!

HOJU 12-15-2005 06:41 AM

As far as breaking stuff like CV’s, power steering, etc… I haven't had any issues with my 35's yet, and I drive it hard. In my opinion 35’s aren’t the big barrier that everybody thinks… Sure everyone with 35’s need to make a little room here, a little room there, for when you go crawling, but it’s not that big of a deal. With your 8" of lift you might be ok, you never know? I don't think it's that much different than going from a 31" to a 33"/285, everyone here knows the things that are necessary, and the things that are recommended, but not necessarily mandatory for making that jump. With going from a 33”/285 up to a 35”/315 it’s more of the same, it just involves a few more things that can usually be overlooked in the 31” to 33”/285 jump.

If you can get the tires for cheap, then do it.... If you don’t like the ride, you can always just wait until you have the money to re-gear. When I made that jump, I went- exhaust and tires, waited a month or two to re-gear to 4.88's and it wasn't that bad, the exhaust helped a bit and driving in town was just fine, but on the freeway it was like a 3.0 compared to a 3.4. Not terrible, just very noticeable. After I re-geared, everything was back to normal except driving up some of our Utah canyons and trying to maintain the speed limit would be a challenge. The S/C fixed that for me… :great:

tarheelrunner 12-15-2005 07:24 AM

I'm with HOJU, if you can get a good deal on the 35's (and they have decent tread) then pick them up and atleast try them out. If there's not enough power take them back off, atleast you'll already have tires out of the way when you regear!
Plus, most guys on here are running 285s w/3" of lift, so 285s on a truck with 8" of lift has got to look like it needs bigger tires....very soon!

shazaam 12-15-2005 07:29 AM

go with 37's

Until Lee met me I believe his "wheeling pics" were all on grass and I seem to recall one in a park with a picnic table and everything, hahahahaha. I am pretty sure I got the first pics of him actually wheeling, hahaha. No hate here, I still think Erik should speak for himself, but it was a good chance for a jab at Lee! :P Lee's truck isn't so clean anymore, we wheeled this past weekend and he pushed in his fender and front bumper and hammered his rear bumper, all without whimpering! I was impressed! Soon enough we will convert him to a non-bling wheeler! I actually loved to keep my truck nice and clean, I wheeled it for a year and it still looked brand new...then I started wheeling too much and too hard and it stopped looking so nice, then I gave up on it and bought an '85 4runner. :bigok:

tc 12-15-2005 08:38 AM

Dude - you need bigger tires worse than anyone on here - they barely make it up past the bottom of the body in the back! :)

payyourtoll 12-15-2005 11:33 AM

you are too tall for 33s imo.

go 35s or go home :D

2wheelBLACKOUT 12-15-2005 03:26 PM

I say DO IT. It will be SICK!

4x4runnerGIrL 12-15-2005 03:37 PM

:guitar:

dragr1 12-15-2005 05:38 PM

If it's a really good deal and you can afford it, then get 'em and try it out.

BajaRunner 12-15-2005 07:42 PM

They are BFG mudders, $250 with 80% tread and located about 10 minutes from my house. :D

Honestly I dont mind the look of my 285's right now... but, I wouldnt mind going a little bigger!

Im going to take off the body lift sometime soon. I'll probably still be able to clear them though without them.

Jeremy... the picts of my car are in my sig :)

FilthyRich 12-15-2005 07:43 PM

Do it :great:

lee 12-19-2005 05:33 AM

hahah what the heck

i stumbled across this thread where heath poops on me behind my back  jerk.

ill continue to keep my truck as clean as possible, but im not gonna cry over battlescars as long as theyre incurred while wheelin' and not by some grandma in a parking lot.

of course i dont care about bumpers (esp the front one), TJM is comin' up for me by the spring :D

Jboy 12-20-2005 09:59 PM

That lift makes your tires look like sk8brd wheels, get the 35s or 37s

HOJU 12-22-2005 12:10 PM

Ever decide what you're gonna do?

4runner4me 12-22-2005 03:51 PM

get them I am going to try them next pretty soon. Most 315/75 are 34.5 so you will probley get a 34 with most brands. I know when I had dunlop 285's they where no 33s more like a 32. My 305/70s mtr's are a little bigger but I like the look you get from 315's. they will work i bet no problem.

grimpy 12-22-2005 04:43 PM

I say do it bro! When I get bored of my 295/75/16's I am going to shave the crap off the fender flares and pound the crap out of the wheelwell so I can do a similar setup to 4x4runnerGIrL...

northfacer581 12-23-2005 07:55 AM

i hope everyone reading this has taken a look at this:
http://www.sonoransteel.com/thirtyfive.html
its just not knocking out the fenders and doing a little cutting here and there. its bigger things like significant gas loss without a regear/big loss in power, lots of stress put on the stock ifs and especially if you wheel it, you will break stuff. dont forget about the a-arms, they need to be shaved. and this is only the minimum...now if you dont wheel/wheel hard, go on. but im not gona go up to 35s just for the look/a little extra ground clearance when i know that i cant wheel it hard without breaking stuff JUST BECAUSE my freaking tires are too big.
