Shifting Problem

I have a '98 4Runner SR5 4x4 and it keeps having issues shifting. Its an automatic and I bought it in May with 99k miles on it. It was just getting stuck and around its 2nd or 3rd shift only in the morning, always around 6am when it was cold. If it wasn't drivin until 9am it wouldn't do it. Now its even doing it when its warm. I took it to a transmission guy and he said this little silver pully thingy is kind of sticky but thats normal for a 4Runner. Yesterday when I was waiting for this light to change (completely stopped) it like slamed into gear? I don't know what it did. It felt like someone hit me in the rear and jerked my car. My Dad said it might be my transmission or something. I wasn't paying much attention.

I remember a thread like this but I couldn't find it in the search thingy. I know a few other people had the problem and put stuff in their car to clean it out. I did that but its not helping. Anyone else have any idea what it might be before I take it in? I'm not really worried about the price because my Dad is a owns an auto repair but he hurt his shoulder and I don't want him to do it so hes taking it to a good friend. Maybe its something simple?

Hopefully I explained everything right. I kind of just woke up, LOL!

Yup, and when the transmission guy checked it, he said it looked really good.

Possible a shift solenoid is going out on ya...

At the very least pull the pan, clean the screen filter and top off again with fresh fluid. It could be a whole host of things (slipping clutches, shift solenoids, etc). It might be as simple as your filter being clogged. You might also try PM'ing Tansdude (John from IPT transmission) who knows these A340's inside and out.

They think its a solenoid but then they said it could be something really simple too.

I shall PM that guy and ask him. Thanks!

I have a 98 and it does the same thing. Since new, it has always done similar to what you describe at stop lights . It just recently started doing the slow shift when it is cold in the morning. I've maintained the tranny and I don't really think it's a problem. Like it was mentioned ealier, do the tranny fluid exchange/flush.

If I thought it was a problem, I would have had it fixed long ago. I have 125,000 on it. I'm not a certified mechanic, but wouldn't lose any sleep over it until it starts slipping or not shifting. Then again if it's under warrenty - Take it in. Good luck - Mike
