The old Reed valve, didn't hear this question in awhile: anyhow, it sits next to your EGR and it has a vacuum line on it that connects to port "AS" or the far left port of the VSV. To test it apply vacuum to it, with vacuum applied air should not pass through it. It usually gets noisy when it goes bad, If I remember when the engine starts to warm up you'll hear it. It's all part of the Emmission/EGR system. So there you have it in a nutshell, I hope it hlped you out. Dents in the bellhousing won't hurt anything as long as they aren't severe. Good Luck!
