Rear window stuck in down position on 2001 T4R

Hey all. I just sold my 98 2WD 4runner and picked up a 2001 4WD on thursday. When I bought it, I knew that the window didn't work and that was fine since it was stuck in the up position. I never used it on my old one and I would get it fixed when I had a chance.

Today, when I was about to run it through the car wash, I opened up the back door to make sure I had my armor-all, towel, etc, and when I closed it, the window went down and I can't get it back up. It stayed up at the dealer and when we went to get groceries this morning. I have a piece of plastic on it now and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or how much it would cost to have this fixed. It really sucks, because I don't have a garage and not a whole of time. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

is the wiper all the way up and is it not locked ? have you tired to roll it up using the key?

You might have a plug thats not plugged in all the way or a bad connection inside the door panel. I say pop off the panel and remove the metal sheild and see if you can see anything obvious

On my 2000 4runner I had a simlar problem. I had an intermitant rear window and my back cargo light would dim to off after closing the hatch. I found a few broken wires inside the rubber covered wire loom that connects the hatch to the body. There is, or should I say was, a hard plastic restraint on the wires. I removed it, and did not put it back on, and checked the wires and found some broken wires. I fixed them and all is good. This was a few years ago and have had no problems. The wires have no problem keeping from being pinched without the plastic keeper. I belive that the keeper was putting alot of strain on the wires. I would start there.

Thanks very much for the responses. I did take off the panel and the black metal cover and didn't really have too much time to check all the wires and stuff before it got dark. The wiper is in the resting/start position and that was working fine before. I haven't tried the key yet though. The window just went down into the door by force when I closed it, I'll have to check it out some more in the morning. Just got back from cleaning our little condo garage out enough so I could squeeze it in there. Thanks again:banger:

btw, here is a pic of black 4runner I sold. It had 158,000 miles and I figured I would get a 4WD before I started more serious mods. Had her for 4 years and she ran great. The silver 4runner is just like my new one, minus the pinstripe.

After looking at the picture I see the problem. You still have the running boards on.

if you end up needing a rear window relay (the orange box in the gate) I have one for sale.

Well, since it was raining today and I really didn't have a place to try to fix it, plus my wife is going to be out of town with her vehicle most of the week and I have to drive our 4 year old around, I took it up to Firestone and had it fixed. They didn't replace the motor or anything. I just wanted the window up and to stay up, so they took out one of the gears, then put the window in the up position and then replaced the gear. Seems to be holding up fine. I'll look into getting a motor later after I get some new tires. It still has the original equipment Bridgestone Dueler H/T 689 on it and they have to go. Thanks for the replies.
