Radio Help...
I am a new member and I appreciate all of the help this forum has been in the research of my new 4Runner (1999 4x2, black, sport). Tonight I changed over to synthetic oil (mobil 1). Learned that the filter is in a crazy spot, and got oil all over my garage. Much fun. Tomorrow night, I am going to install an Alpine Head Unit and remove my double din factory unit.
I haven't ever done an installation, but I am using the write up provided on this site as somewhat of a guide. One question, the guys that sold me the tray, ipod cable, harness/ kit told me that I needed to run a cable to the battery for this HU because it is a V-Power, whatever that means. Can I just run that cable with the rest of the fuse cables through the firewall and attach it to the positive battery connection, or do I need to drill a hole in my firewall (which I don't want to do) and cover the wire with some rubber or something???? The rest of the install looks fairly easy, this is the only part that is concerning me. Thanks in advance for your help. |
just run it through ur rubber gromet wire the rest of ur wireing harness goes .

alpine told us all in training that we needed to wire the yellow battery wire direct on those decks as well. at first we did, then to the ignition harness using a T-tap.
now....we just wire em into the harness just like any other deck. I've yet to run into a problem with that method. I have trouble believing that they can reliably squeeze 65 watts out of an amplifier that small, and still only need a 16ga input power. |
Well, I hooked it all up last night. It was quite an experience, but I learned a lot and my truck is still in one piece. It fits nicely, and I just poked a small hole in the rubber grommit (sp?) that feeds my wire harness through the firewall and used that small hole for the wire to the battery.
Then I put a fuse about 2 inches off the battery to be on the safe side. Everything works well for now, and it even sounds awesome with my factory speakers, which sounded like total crap with the factory HU. Thanks so much for your help. I'm sure I'll be installing a sub or two in the coming weeks, much more to learn. |
If you don't want that factory HU, I'll take it off of your hands. :D

Thanks for the offer but I'm going to keep it for if/when I ever sell the truck. If someone absolutely needs one, I'd consider selling it to help them out if they couldn't find one, but I'd prefer to hold on to it.
