Quarter mile time for 97 tacoma

Just this last weekend, I went with a bunch of friends to the track, and one of my friends has a completly stock 1997 reg cab, 5spd, 2wd, 2.4 L. What would you expect something like this to get on the quarter mile? Here's what happened.

He raced a couple of times, and couldn't do better than 20s. But then he let some other of my friends drive it, and one got 18.6 I think, and he doesn't drive stick ever, and the other got about the same. Then one of them went again, and ended up getting a 17.2 for the quarter mile time. I am simply amazed that that was achieved. It has no power at all, but it does have light weight and small on it's side. Now I don't know if that is something that should be excited about, I know 17.2 isn't fast in the quarter mile, but with this truck, it seems like it is. I even raced my 4Runner that's a 1990 3.0 5spd, and the best I got was a 19.7, but mine is 4wd, higher off ground, bigger tires, etc... Anyways, just wanted to know how great this is. Also, just wondering if anyone else here has something similar, and the times they have gotten.

My 04 RC 2WD 2.4L 5 speed Tacoma feels fairly quick. I'm thinking its definitly in the 16's. I mean 2,700lbs and 140 h.p. Not to bad of a Power to weight ratio.

Still slow compared to my Hemi though... it ran 14.0 with just a tuner and a air intake and that was with 33" tall 20's!

Oh well.... I still like the Tacoma a lot.

Have you found TRDOLMAN's numbers yet?

S/C'd, not turbo'd. Only bolt-on mods:

Keep in mind that a LOT of a 1/4 mile is about your reaction time. If you're slow or bog it off the light, your ET will suck. I'd bet that's a lot of the 3 second difference in how your friend's truck did with different drivers.

I thought your ET "started" when your tires broke the first or second sensor? In other words, I thought your reaction time was never "added" to your ET. I could be wrong though.

Reaction time has nothing to do with the elapsed time from the start to finish since you could sit at the light after it's turned green for a full minute then go and your 1/4 mile time would be the same. Reaction time is everything tho' when actually racing somebody whether it's heads up or bracket racing.

Hmmm... yeah, you guys are right... I never think about running a 1/4 without racing against someone.

I keep thinking about this slip:

http://www.gadgetonline.com/DragStrip.htm

Which is basically a "win" for the right lane 'cause of the left lane sleeping at the light.

Plus the right lane's ET was almost .6 quicker so the guy in the left could have hit a perfect light and still lost a heads up race. I think you're referring to somebody that wins with a slower ET but wins by virtue of the quicker reaction.

Don't mean to sound rude, but I was hoping somebody on here has the exact same truck, 2.4 5spd reg cab 2wd, and has ran the 1/4 and what their time was. All of your information has been very cool though. My friend wants to know if the 17.2(i found out yesterday it was acctually 17.02) is better than what is listed as factory times. I just can't seem to find the times, and 0-60 for a 1997 2.4 5spd 2wd reg cab anywhere. I will say that seeing it race was pretty funny, and was astonishing that it ran such a great time with such a small engine and no power, but it is light weight. We went with about 20 people, and we all raced are cars, a 6.6 Duramax ext cab 4wd Chevy, which ran a 14.2(it has aftermarket computer and exhaust), a 05 gmc sierra with the 4.3 ran a 18.6, a newer(forget the year, but it was the body style before the 05) roush mustang 5speed s/c ran in the 13s, my 4Runner 1990 5spd, 4wd 3.0 I got to ran a 19.7 at best, my firends 97 17.02, and the one we all pretty much went to watch race was my friends 66( Ithink or 67) mustang. He has run a 12.3 I think with nos, but he was having problems the night we went, and only ran a 13.8, which is still good. Anyways, racing is fun, and it is one of the coolest things I've ever done.
