Power Brake Booster
The brake booster on my 88 4Runner is whistling at me everytime I stop, so I assume it has a hole in the diaphram. Does anyone have a suggestion/opinion on what I should replace it with? Is there a good aftermarket piece that someone could recommend? How about whatever Pep Boys might carry? Or is the best, and probably most expensive solution, to buy a new one from the local stealership? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Those things usually last the lifetime of the car. Is it possible you have a hose leak rather than a hole in the diaphram? My personal opinion is pick one up from the junkyard. They are usually in fairly well condition.

I've always thought they were good for the life of a vehicle also. I don't know of any hose or anything else associated with the brakes that would cause this whistle. It only whistles at a certain pressure (about 1/4 till 3/4 of the pedal depressed), I had someone push the pedal while I listened, and it certainly seems to be coming from the booster.

1/4 million miles! No wonder its wore out.
It does seem to be the booster. Just get one from a wrecking yard, of ask "Toyota parts dude" if he has one. He is on the members list. |
