picture request: 3rd gen 4runner rear wind deflector

Hi guys,

I can't remember who i bought a wind deflector from (a member from GA, iirc), but anyways, i *think* there are some parts missing. i understand that you do not drill the deflector mounts into the rear hatch. so there must be a piece that clamps the two mounts together.

so my request is for a pic of the mounts that are attached on the inside part of the rear hatch.

Thanks,
Bob

i'm pretty sure you have to drill... i've seen a 99 limited without one, and there are tapped inserts where the bolts would go.

The wing doesn't match up to the hatch hinges, its starts at about the inner bolt and goes inward, and you can't see anything on the inside, just smooth metal. There are only 2 screws for each side.

One more for the heck of it.

I would get some pics from my '98...but it's raining outside.

i just got one, but i think that i going to get the dealer to install it because i am a little nervous abot tking a drill to the back of my 4runner.

FUZION Apr 4, 2006 07:18 PM

I drilled holes on my hatch. Easy :great:

habanero,

thank you very much for the pics. yes, it does look like it's drilled into the the top. if there are pre-drilled screw holes, then it'll be a matter of just finding those holes and (gulp) drilling the holes.

ill take a look

yep, mine had 3/side in an inverted triangle. the top two were tapped, and i think i had a bolt goin through the bottom one. cant remember (took it off last year)...but i definitely know holes need to be drilled. mine didnt have the cutout for the 3rd brake light, and was an oem one...

FilthyRich Apr 4, 2006 07:53 PM

When a tree limb crushed my wife's tailgate I got an OEM gate. The stupid stealer forgot to order the defelctor parts. Add another week to the repairs b/c they had to order the hardware to install--It entailed drilling into gate and mounting it. The OEM gate did not come pre-drilled.

garrett1478 Apr 4, 2006 07:54 PM

maybe the dealer has some type of paper template that they tape down and drill where the holes are. thats how it is when you install a hood protector so you know where to stick the rubber nubs.

Bob_98SR5 Apr 4, 2006 09:46 PM

ok, there are three holes lined up in a triangle fashion. two on top and one below (not shown in habanero's picture).

the top two seem like they are tapped into the body from the *outside in*

the lower one (single) seems to be tapped from the *inside out*

if the bottom hole is tapped from the inside and if it lines up w/ the hinge w/ the two bolts (hab's 2nd pic), then i betcha you have to remove the tailgate by removing the tailgate bolts to tap it

if so, i may just forget it.

You'll have to drill holes

Hey Bob...If you're talking about the OEM wind deflector and if your 4Runner originally did not come with one then I think you'll have to drill holes on it in and put in tappered inserts in order to mount it. There is no access to it from the back, everything is screwed in place from the front....here are the pics of mines because I swapped it out in favor of Jaos one..hope it helps.

These two screws hold the bracket in place with the deflector

ice,

THANKS! wow, that's great info, esp about the 3rd screw. i wouldve made a huge mistake on that one!

so did the jaos one use the existing screw holes? or did you use something like a wall anchor to provide the screws a mechanism in which to screw into?

The Jaos one does not require any drilling...it simply mounts on with clamps and comes with a Third brake light cover...all you need to do is to connect the new LED third brake light and your set. I could post pics of it later if you need them.

I thought it was to help keep the rear window clear in the snow/rain?
That looks like a major PITA to add one on.....glad mine already came with one.

lee Apr 5, 2006 04:49 AM

i like them, but i thought they also kept exhaust from coming in when you have the window down too? or something?

i remember reading that. ive never had a problem with that though.

bigacuralvr Apr 5, 2006 09:00 AM

I'd like to see the pic of your JAOS one....

Mine didn't come with ine, and there are no holes, or indentations where holes were. I think the Runners look clean without them.

Brett
