Picked up fzj80 wheels today!

I found three locally. Picked them up for 150$. They'll definately need some refinishing. I'm thinking graphite powdercoat to match the graphite color on my fender flares and body cladding. All I need to do is find one more and 4 center caps. Also, would i be able to use the same lug nuts that are currently on my runner or would i need the lugnuts specifically for the LC wheels?

sounds like a plan pretty sure you can reuse the lug nuts

check the lugnut seats. some came with a flat face, and others came with a bevelled face. the flat ones use a shank style lug, and the bevelled use an acorn style.

that said, my oem lugs from my 98LTD w/ 16" alloys work with both style. i should really get proper nuts, but i've had em on for 20,000km and 14 months with no issues...

FJ80 wheels rock!

i'm just going to get them done locally. a friend referred me to a place thats about 15 min. away from my house and he said they have very reasonable prices. i'd rather not have to pay to ship them out.

Have you considered painting them? VHT makes an awesome wheel paint and the job isn't very hard...if you're interested, I have a how-to video in my sig (and in the tech section).

I'll be the first to admit that powdercoating is ideal, but it's not always easy to make it happen on a DD and with a limited budget.

Congrats on finding some. It took me quite a while to find them locally. They are great wheels. I got a pair of 285 Nittos from Discount tires and the guy said he only had to put 1 ounce of weight on each wheel.

Mine where from a 94 FJ80. I think the fj80s (pre 95) had the conical black inserts and the fjz80s (95-97) did not have that insert. Otherwise I think they are the same wheel.

That is another option for me. However, i'm currently waiting for a response from yotatech member webilt. He expressed interest in shipping me out a wheel, but i certainly understand he may be busy. I most definately would rather go through a fellow yotatech member than an auto recycling place.

This is a detailed thread on refinishing LC wheels.

I may have a spare rim to sell if you get stuck.

I have read that thread, those rims came out beautiful. I actually was just down at the powdercoater and got a quote. He's going to do them in a color called black chrome, said it was as close as he could get to graphite without it being too black. He had a valve cover there in black chrome and it looked perfect. Not black or chrome at all, definately more along the lines of the color i wanted. It's going to be done with 2 coats, one of black chrome and one of clear....As soon as i find myself a 4th wheel, there goin to get coated.

5 spoke wheels (like the pic nrgetic posted) have the shank style lug nuits (93+) the wheels that look like early style SR5 wheels usse the acorn style lug nuts, and also do not have the same offset. (91-92)

i've got both styles on my runner. the oem lugs from my split 3 spoke 16's worked with both. they've got the tapered end, as well as the shank w/ washer. over 25,000km with em and no issues...

Incorrect, 93 and 94 fzj80 wheels (look exactly like the ones pictured) also use acorn lugs, 95+ fzj80 wheels use the shank lugs. I know, my set consists of wheels from a 93 and a 94, they all use acorn lugs.

Spaugh, you are way overcomplicating this. You do not need to change the studs, just get the right lug nuts for the wheel (ie the acorn lugs). They're like $1.20 each. And those black inserts, they're not plastic, they are steel. I suppose, if you wanted to, you could drill them out and use your shank lugs, but thats alot of work and may potentially ruin the wheel. Just buy the lugs that were designed to be used on that wheel, then you wont have to worry about your wheel falling off in the middle of nowhere, studs getting stripped, or the wheel getting completely ˟˟˟˟ up. IMO, i'd just spend the 10 bucks for the correct lugs just to have peace of mind.
