Parting ways with My 4Runner...Sell or Trade? (Poll)
I've got my 4Runner listed on the classifieds here (as well as AutoTrader, and the newpaper, and my company's intranet, etc, etc) and no activity at all in a couple of weeks. I have found a Tundra that I REALLY like but I will only get about $5,000-$6,000 if I trade it in. All the money, time, and sweat to mod the truck will be for naught. So.....what would you guys do....
1. Ride it out and hope to sell it private party?
2. Bite the bullet and give it to the dealer?
I really wanted someone to be able to enjoy this truck and all of the effort that I put into it, but that may not be the case. If I don't act quickly, I may lose the Tundra. It's a tough pill to swallow to give up $5,000. Let me hear ya thoughts! Thanks!

if there's one thing i've learned, deals come and go, and haven't regretted waiting on the right deal at the right time yet... i just wouldn't rush into getting the truck when you'd most likely regret the fast-paced transaction. I say sell private (more money return, though nowadays suv resale have tanked) and buy when you're good and ready.

I know...that's what I've been told before (about 20k-30k miles ago) was around $5,000-$6,000. That is an absolute insult.
I was told by one dealer that they would basically take all of the mods off and strip it before it went straight to auction as a BASIC 4Runner. Soooo...I could take off the brush guard, Piaa lamps, remove my amps and sub, roof rack, etc and either put them in/on the new truck or sell them. Anybody wanna buy a millenium silver metallic brush guard?
I'm aiming at a niche market (mainly you guys!) and there's just not a big market out there right now for anything. They are giving me one HECK of a deal on the Tundra and I don't want it to get away! I may seriously take everything off that I can and give them as little as I can if they only offer $5k-$6k for it.
As sad as it sounds, I could probably take a day of vacation and go sit in the parking lot of Hoover High (Yes...that Hoover High from MTV's Two a Days show for a couple seasons) and have some kid get me to follow him home and his dad cut me a check after school. That sounds really bad when I'm 31 and still driving this truck!
I cleaned it up and was going to leave it parked in the garage and bank on the AutoTrader exposure, but I think I will keep driving it now that it's plastered with FOR SALE signs and be a moving billboard!

yes hang in there-strip a few of the doo dads if you want them in the Tundra but in time you will get close to what dollar figure you think you need to get out of the Runner.
Think of innovative ways to sell it and see that thread "Wow that is depressing 4Runners not selling..." that dude hung in there and eventually we all found him a buyer here in CO even though truck was in Indiana I believe it was..
And they are practically giving the Tundras away out here, prices just a hair above the Tacomas. You should be able to find yourself a Tundra any time you are ready.
Patience my good man-unless your pockets are deep enough to take a hit like that....

I always like to sell privately, as trade in values are a joke. HOWEVER, there are exceptions. Really comes down to what you want. If you want that Tundra, go for it. It's sometimes worth the loss to just trade it in and be driving a truck you really want, instead of trying to sell a car you don't.
That said, what do you have it priced at? At $6,000 trade in, your tax savings will be ~$420 (at 7% tax). Why not price it at $7-8k? Take some good pictures and it should move quick. I'd return it all back to stock, too, to broaden your market.
Good luck on the truck. I got my truck and will never go back to an SUV.

It's priced at $10,000 right now but that's based on a blue book value (Average of KBB, Edmunds, and NADA) of around $6,500 and about $3,500 for the mods....so basically half of what the mods cost when they were "brand new."
I know this is a high price for a high mileage truck, but the look and the mods speak for themselves. This truck is an eye catcher and I still get compliments to this day about how awesome it looks and that it looks brand new. That being said, having the mods confines me to a niche market and I just don't know that I'm patient enough to wait 2-3 months to try and sell it. I would rather strip off the Piaas, the Pilot lights, the amps, the sub, the inverter and anything else that I can re-use on the Tundra and take my lumps. My wife is very likely to try to change my mind though....she's at a concert right now and not hearing all of this! On the other side of that argument...she is driving around in a 2006 Sequoia Limited with every offered option on it! It is SOOO nice to drive that thing around. Between room and ride quality...wow! The new Tundras are the same way!
I am impatient (not good I know) but I just don't see me being able to get $10k for this truck. The market is just not there for a soon to be 8 year old truck. Call me crazy, but I may just strip as much as I can over the weekend, sell some of it like the brush guard if I can to recoup some cash, and save the rest of the mods for the tundra...who knows. I love the Tundra and don't want it to get away but I hate to send my baby for the past 7 years to a damn chop shop...and that's exactly where it is headed. The million dollar question is this...Is a couple thousand dollars worth me losing out on the truck that I absolutely love? My answer right now would be no, but my wife might try to change my mind.
Keep the feedback coming guys....and potential buyers!!!!

i'd be interested in the hitch and w/e parts off that would be needed to install and the cargo cover thing for the trunk. that is if your willing to sell that too.
and i'm only an hour from b'ham.

Be patient my friend. There car market is soo bad right now, and a lot of people are selling their full size V8s. I am seeing a lot of Tundras for sale out here. Get what you want for your 4runner and keep your eyes pealed for another Tundra. Look outside your market too. Driving a nice Tundra from Cali to Ali would be a bitchin road trip. No worries! Good luck!

Too bad you already have a brush guard! Some stuff I am not going to the trouble of removing like the Speedhut reverse indiglo gauges, the Dakota Digital voltmeter and compass with outside temp display...some items will be more trouble than they are worth.
If I can re-use it or sell it though, then it's a goner...assuming they offer me a fair trade value based on my average of KBB, Edmunds, and NADA. If not, then it will sit in my garage until further notice or someone offers me fair value for it!
Who knows what tomorrow morning holds....

There is your answer. Having something you want (and of course, living within your means) would totally be worth a couple of thousand. That's pennies compared to your enjoyment and comfort.

I would have kept it.It probably gets better mpg than a tundra.Gas aint going to stay this cheap.I saw an 06 tundra for 15,000 in the paper right next to an 06 tacoma dbl cab for 20,000.Go figure I guess it all depends on whats selling,Heavy gas guzzling trucks are not flying off the lots right now.!
