OME 882 with Toytec top plate spacer what shocks work ??

2000 4runner v6 2wd auto with 32/11.5r15

OK so I want to do the OME 882 springs with the Toytec top plate spacer for 3" of lift. But I need to find out if my shocks will work with that setup. I have read from Toytec that I don't need to switch out my shocks to the OME N91S if I don't want to. But then I have read on here that I do need to change them out.

Current front end setup: 2.5 inch cornfed spacers with Monroe Sensa-trac shocks

Monroe Sensa-Trac - M37157, 4Runner

Compressed 12.5"
Extended 20.00"

I don't have specs on N91S shocks but I think from what I have read that they have the same specs as the Bilstein BE5-2451.

Bilstein BE5-2451, 4Runner

Compressed 322.5mm (12.7")
Extended 513mm (20.2")

So who is right?

The OME 882's are a good choice in front coils. I've been running mine for about 6 months now and have been very pleased. With that said, I don't think you'll need the top plate spacers for the 3" of lift you're looking for. I'm running just the coils and got right at 3" of lift on my '02 SR5. Like you, I replaced my sagging 2.5" spacers.

My initial plans were to reuse the Rancho RS5000 series shocks I put on with the spacer lift. But, found out quickly that they weren't long enough to fit the coils. The specs I have on OME's N91SC comfort valved shocks show that they are 13.2" compressed and 18.5" extended. I went the OEM route based on their great reputation and I knew that their shocks worked with the 882 coils. Also, I've heard that the HD Billies are very harsh and would just stay away from Monroe shocks altogether.

The Monroe tech department didn't recommend any of their shocks for this application due to the internal bump stops possibly not allowing the shocks to extend enough to fit the coil. I know it sounds strange to think that a 20" extended shock wouldn't fit the same coil that a 18.5" extended shock would, but that's what their tech advised. OME shocks are relatively expensive, but they work great and you know they'll fit the 882 coils. Good luck!

882s need longer shocks and typically you want a aftermarket heavy front bumper and winch installed. If not, then I'd suggest 881s.

I was told that the 881 would only provide 2 inches of lift? would I need the longer shocks with 881 or would my current shock work? would my shocks be fully ext all the time?

Stock shocks are just that...stock length. If you want to fully utilize your new coils and lift, get new longer shocks.

881s with a top plate will do 3" of lift...give or take a smidge.

The 881's are reported to give 2" of lift maximum. You could always include a 1" spacer with them, but then you end up with the same lift as the 882's. I have the factory bumper and think the 882's are just right.

You may be able to use your current shocks with the 881's, but definitely not the 882's. The 882's do not fully extend your shocks at all times, but lifting your rig that much does take some additional travel out of the front suspension. I've wheeled mine hard several times and haven't been let down once.

Occasionally, there are good deals to be had in the marketplace section here on YT. Ebay is always another option too. I'd strongly consider the N91SC comfort valved shocks though as their ride will be better than the N91S's.

The the folks at Sonoran Steel sell the TRD's with some of their lift kits. They've done a lot of research on front coils and believe that the TRD's are the best springs for offroading. There are quite a few members here that run them and have been happy with the TRD's.

Although there aren't as many of us running the OME 882's, the ones that are have been very happy with that coil...myself included. I've wheeled my rig many times with the OME 882 coil/N91SC shock setup up front and can't imagine another setup doing any better than mine. But, I haven't wheeled in a rig with the TRD coils, so I can't make a personal comparison.

As far as differences go, the OME 882's are stiffer. Lift wise, they gave a full 3" of lift on my '02, while the TRD's reportedly give 2.5" or less. Increased lift is the primary reason I went with the OME's as I was trying to match the height of LC rear coils. IMO, the TRD's don't lift enough and would give a raked look. I had 2.5" spacers up front for a while, but wasn't happy with the rake of my rig.

Either spring is a good choice, it just comes down to personal preference and the amount of lift you're looking for.
