I had the same problem with my old 4Runner, the whole intake was full of oil. Sorry to say that I don't know what caused it either. There might be a few vacum lines that connect to the valve covers, in this case that would probably be where the oil is coming from, but I don't know.

in my honda it was caused by over filling the oil/bad pcv valve and it was throwing oil back into the intake.

Yea I would try replacing the pcv valve, then clean the intake and check again later.

x2 on the pcv takes all of 5secs to replace it but i would get some intake cleaner and clean the tube real good and the throttle body and then clean the maf with ether electrical contact cleaner or maf cleaner

wish I could say the same for the 22RE. That little grommet makes the PCV hell to get out.

x3 on PCV (and clean box so you can tell if it happens w/ new PCV). If it does, you might want to check compression (my thought would be ring blowby).

If you change the PCV valve... get a new grommet (sp?) as well... The rubber hole the PCV valve plugs into... I just got a new one and when I removed the old grommet, the crap just cracked into three pieces...

well guys we took a look at it today. Can't you check to see if a pcv vavle is good by blowing on it and one side should let air out and the other should not? the old pcv valve did that, but the one that we replaced with allowed air both ways? anyways. the tube leading to the intake was lined with oil and the little "reservoir" was full of oil. I am not sure how long it took for it to fill. We did a dry compression check and all cylinders were ~160. it seemed a bit low, but at least they were all pretty much the same. We also noticed that the oil seemed to be close to a quart over.

maybe from here?

I appreciate any ideas you may have.
Thanks again.
