OEM vs. Amsoil air filter
 
Does anyone have any data on filtration and efficiancy on these two filters? Any increase in gas mileage with the Amsoil? I have an Amsoil for my new '04 TRD Taco, but after looking @ the test results posted by evilcow here ,

I'm starting to reconsider. I am going to deckplate the airbox, but if there's no significant bump in fuel economy with the Amsoil, I'd just as soon be feeding my engine the cleanest air possible. I plan on putting at least 200k on this truck, just like I did with the '93 I just sold. Also, any input on the best time to switch from dino to synthetic would be appreciated. The truck has about 750 miles on it. Thanks for all the great info so far guys.

This topic has been covered multiple times which is probably why nobody wants to post ;)

Bottom line - More tests have shown Amsoil to give you better results than OEM than not.
Synthetics - Seems like general consensus is that it is never too early to switch.

If you're interested in some of the details you can use the search button and find yourself with enough threads for you to read until it comes out your ears :D

Been beaten to death WAY too many times.....too much data to show Amsoil was better than OEM and K&N on a 3rd gen.

I should have just ask for info on the toyota filter. Seems like I've read every type of test on every filter except the toyota factory filters. Maybe I'm stupid, but so far I have'nt found a good comparison test that includes the toy. oem. Help me please..

Seems like the oem is better than the foam...My YZ250F uses a 2 stage UNI for huge air demands, but requires frequent cleanings if your not up front...the dirtbike motor is a twin cam stroker with 5 Ti valves & a redline of 13.5k. The uni is the best choice for a race bike, but all I want to know is how the TOYOTA OEM filter compares in a scientifically monitored test with the Amsoil. Like those dudes on the deisel site, or maybe gadget, but he does't post anything on oem filters. Maybe he han't tested them yet...could be I just have'nt been serching correctly. If that's the case, I apologize

Most of the time you will not see anyone testing things like Accumulative Capacity or Initial Restriction or Dirt Passed Versus Total Test Time or even flow because really all people are after is an increase in HP or torque with adequate filtering of particulates (ie visual inspection of the intake tube and manifold). Gadget simply dyno tested them side by side and proclaimed a winner and I have yet to see results to say otherwise. If you look at the test it was also done on completely clean paper filters, so be careful about assuming that a paper filter outflows foam when dirty as well.

You are just not going to find anyone doing a lab test on air filters like the link you gave. People will run them on the dyno and if they produce more power then the part stays, if not, into the trash it goes (or on ebay! :laugh: )

I'll weigh in with a contrarian opinion: don't spend the money on aftermarket air filters. Power gain is minimal, and when the filter gets dirty there is probably no gain. Better to just replace the OEM filter once a year. Also oiled filters have been known to cause problems with the MAF, although they might have worked that out by 2004.

The only thing synthetic oil will do for you is let you increase the service interval.
