New to Yotatech. Purchasing a 4Runner..Question ?

I?m new to the Toyota community. Saturday I will be purchasing a 2000 4Runner for my wife. It is supercharged, with a supposedly optional exhaust system. In any event it has 108K miles on it and I have been looking to determine what spark plugs I should use. I know that NGK?s and Denso?s are the plugs to use (those are the only brands that will go in my Acura RSX Type-S) however I am uncertain what the spark plug part number should be. I looked it up online, but it seems that they only list for the NA version? Also, any comments on the impending purchase are welcome?

Here?s the link to the ad:http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=215162778

Thanks...

how long has it been supercharged? whats the service history like? get a transmission cooler if it doesnt have one, i dont have a s/c and my tranny just went on me at 113K... so i learned that the hard way.

Again, welcome aboard!

If you have not already checked out Gadget's site, you might want to give it a once over: http://www.gadgetonline.com/. It might be more performance oriented than what you're looking for, but it's still full of knowledge on S/C maintenance and performance.

Plus, there are quite a number of other YT members here that run S/C's that can help you out if need be. :D

Good luck.

I have been to gadgetonline...Nice site...I've also looked at URD...Did Toyota modify the trans at all to accomodate the SC?

I would get the plugs from Toyota, but I figured that I'd save a few dollars if I bought them online, I'm just not certain what one..

Also, I got the CARFAX, and it shows a very thorough maintenance history, so thats a bit reassuring...

Also, to my knowledge, it was supercharged from day one...

You know the rule, if it has an intake it may have been driven a little bit harder? But if the history is straight there there may be another rule, It may have been well taken care of...for an example. If you bought a car from me they all had aftermaket intakes and my old accord, maxima and 300zx TT are still running strong. The accord is at 285K

Did I just give two opposite opinions.

Anyhow do your homework, no tranny cooler just check the fluid, I always thought a 100K mile w/ S/C is better than 50K miles without S/C pulling enclosed trailers all day. History to any used car is key.

I have to agree with you..It has been well maintained, so at least that's covered...As to its use? God knows...I'm taking a chance, but I'm hoping/praying for the best..I had a used vehcle inspection performed at the local Toyota dealership, and he said it everything checked out fine...Also said he didn't see many SC'd Toyotas...

1. Not that I'm aware of.

2. Just make sure you get the right ones. Sometimes saving a few dollars guessing at the right parts can be costly down the road. If it was me, I'd buy them direct from Toyota. More of a piece of mind.

3. A vehicle's history is always good to know.

Well, I called the dealership, and they don't seem to make a differenciation between the SC spark plugs and the NA...Hmmm...

Elton 02-02-2007 09:16 AM

these ? Plugs

Make sure it doesn't have the 7th injector, then get the URD kit (or similar) and the VB upgrade for the tranny or strip off the supercharger and sell it. Seriously. You are playing roulette right now as it stands.

Oh, and to answer your plug question, get the 2-step colder plugs from URD.

The 3.4 is strong, but it can only take so much. Take action quickly as this is no joke.

Elton: Thanks for the link...

<96 Runner>: It sounds as if, in factory form, the SC was a liability in terms of reliability...I will check out the VB upgrade and the other mods you mentioned...
