New Project in progress - skid plates...

Picked up a set of Rockstomper skids off Ebay for $40 + $56 shipping. Not a bad deal at all :bigok:
They were a little rusty. But a little work and some bedliner and they'll look good as new.

A little rusty:

Yup! Having lots of fun with it!

Got the Herculiner applied and the skid mounted. Had to cut a seized bolt to get the old tin foil skid off. So, for now I only have 2 bolts holding it in place up front and two in back.

3/16"

I still need to refinish the transfer case skid. That'll be next weekend's project.

rcars4life 10-09-2006 07:44 PM

just out of curiousity is 3/16 average thickness? I'm planning to just fab one up one of these days. Thanks, truck is lookin gooood

Thanks for the compliment!

It looks like one long sheet of 3/16 that's been bent in 4 places and reinforced with angle iron.

Yes, 3/16" is pretty much the standard. 1/8" is what the stock skid is I think, and 1/4" is just overkill.

rcars4life 10-09-2006 08:12 PM

i'm debating just reinforcing the stock plate with some angle iron, mine isn't bent or mangled at all.

Dude, wheel it til you break it then fab a new one.

rcars4life 10-09-2006 08:33 PM

I was thinkin bout just goin till it breaks but i just don't want it to break and let what ever broke it travel further into the car and break something else. if that makes sense lol.

Alan, IIRC the Rock Stomper Skids are only 11 ga, which translates to about 1/8". When sold by Rock Stomper, this was actually one of their selling features. The fact that the skid would bend and not transfer the energy of the impact to the frame.

I agree the stock skid is very thin, definately not 1/8". The custom 1/8" should be good if reinforced.

I have been running an 11 ga (1/8") "Arizona Made" skid and 1/8" belly pan for about 3 years now. It has been wheeled hard, dented, and pounded out several times. It has not let me down.

I think either 1/8" reinforced or 3/16" is the way to go if you plan to wheel hard.

rcars4life 10-09-2006 10:52 PM

Sounds like a plan, I'll pull my old one off and go from there. I'm not a big fan of how that rockstomper plate looks...to square for my liking lol. Thanks for the help...
haveblue-sorry for the thread steal didn't mean to!
