Need a motor for '92 4runner!

Hello all!
First, I want to say, how much I appreciate this forum. Most of you all seem more dedicated or involved than I with your rigs. Which there are some really nice one's that I have seen the pics of, anyway. Mine is a mere on/off road 4x4. Purely transportation. But, I have really enjoyed having my two Toys and glad to know there is enough folks out there that enjoy their's just as much and more, and willing to share their knowledge so that folks like me aren't so dependant on Mr. Dealership and the "experts" who want more money than I've got just diagnose any problems.
That aside, I have a '92 that had a bad rebuild before I got it, and now needs a rebuild or just new motor. I have several numbers to call to find a motor and a competent friend to help rebuild or otherwise install another, but was wondering if anyone here had any helpful suggestions, as a matter of course. Money is an issue, so I can't afford the 3k + the mechanics, motor sales, dealership want. I am sure you all can understand that. Would appreciate anyone's experience and input. Thanks!

Hey

I just rebuilt mine this year. It was the very first one that I have ever done. If you do it right you can get it rebuilt for pennies. I spent about 1500.00 on it and that bought a nice cam from engnbldr.com. All of the machine work on the heads, block, crank, rods, and the rebuild kit. Its having a sensor problem but other than that it is running like a top!!!! I bet if you call around you would be able to find a used motor for a decent price. It is well worth the money and I have been taught so much. The people on this site are a really good resource too. I hope that you get the chance to do it. Also a really kickass site with tons of info is http://4crawler.com/. best of luck!!

Thank you jjcale. I am hoping to stay under the 1k mark. I know I can with the rebuild option, but I suppose I'll see with another motor. Good luck to you with your new motor. I love my '86, but those 2nd gen's sure are a nice ride, are they not. Smoooooothe! Well, I guess it depends on your tires! ;)
3 liter, V-6 is what I know to call it. So, I suppose then, yeah, the 3VZ-E.
Like YO-truck, Kyle! I almost got one with tiger stripes! I got an '86 4runner instead. More interior room and needed less work. So as not to confuse, I have a '92 and an '86.
