Okay so in the junkyard up the road, there's an 80 Toyota pickup 4x4 with a 22R. We drove it around, and the 4WD works, but that's about it. Half the dash is missing, and it's just really ragged out, but the driveline is good. So we said if we had another body to put on it, it would make a nice wheeler. Well there was a wreck on the way home, so we took a detour. Lo and behold, on the detour we saw a little 86 2WD with a good body, and better 22R motor. Well, you know what I'm going to ask next. Is it possible to change the 86 2WD motor and body onto the 80 4X4 frame? What problems will we encounter? I need to know fast, because we gotta let both the owners know ASAP!! Thanks a ton guys!!!!

I'm not sure about the body mounts but the fenders are not the same. They were more pronounced for the 4x4.

I thought the fenders didn't quite look the same.

Anything is possible if you are determined enough.
But, no, the bodies are completely different. It will not just be a bolt-on.
The engines are different too, and I don't *think* the transmissions were the same so that may not work either.

they are not the same,a friend back home just finished just the opposite. He put a an older 79-83 body on a 84-88 frame and it looked good. How rough is the body i mena if you are going to make it a capable offroad truck i would be more concerned on how well it runs because more than likely you will end up cutting the body anyways.

Did the body mounts line up for your friend? The 4WD body is pretty rusty. We have to completley disassemble and rebuild the truck, and redo everything. The wiring job is terrible. The owner swapped in a 22R in place of the 20R on the 80 model, and there are a bunch of wires just hanging at various places around the truck. We figure since the body is crapped out, as well as the interior, and the 86 has a much better body, as well as a 22R with all the wiring like it was from the factory, that would be the easiest route to take. Just swap the motor and body, and the whole thing will be a lot cleaner. The 80 does not have an exhaust except for just the manifold and collector, so that probably is making it run like crap. The 86 motor has 298,000, but has many new parts, including a timing chain. Sounds like a fun project to me. Plus, it will keep my 93 from having to serve off-road duty!

hell if the 86 is nice just do an SAS with the parts from the other truck. that way you will already have the wider rear axle and the IFS steering box mounted. That will save you some headache in the long run.

if you were driving it around nuff said....you don't need a dash to offroad
