Need advice on method for changing fluids...
 

:think: okay, so i'm going home this weekend for Christmas break, and i know i need to check my trans and t-case fluid levels before all of my hunting trips. so, i also decided i might as well change the fluid in both of them, since it's about time. my question is, how do you guys recommend getting the new gear oil into the trans and t-case? i thought about just using some hose and putting the bottle of oil in the engine compartment and squezzing it into there so i don't have to buy a hand pump. but any help/suggestions will be appreciated...thanks. :great:

Honestly, I'm not sure about the tranny. Haven't done it yet, probably something I need to do over break too, I'm guessing just a simple drain plug on the bottom of tranny pan and fill through the dipstick tube...?

The tcase has a fill and drain plug, undo the top plug first and then to the bottom and let'r rip. Check out www.4runners.org

yeah, 4runners.org is the site i've been looking at while planning this out...i saw on there in pics where the fill and drain plugs are at for both the trans and t-case. i just don't want to buy one of those hand-pump things if there's an easier/cheaper way of getting my fluid in there...

The hose on the bottle makes a huge mess. Trust me. Get yourself one of these pumps and it makes the job go so much quicker.

I got it at AutoZone for under $10. I've used it for many different things. You can even suck old fluid out with it if you needed to.

cool man, tanks for that info...what do you do, suck the fluid outta the bottle into the pump, and the squirt it into the trans or t-case? :think: i might try it if it's actually less than $10...:hillbill:

Tranny - Drain at the drain plug, you should warm up the fluid with a twenty minute drive prior to draining. Refill at the tranny dipstick. FYI - you'll probably drain about 4-5 quarts of tranny fluid. do it at the next 2-3 oil changes in order to get the most transfer of odl for new.

Yeah you suck it out of the bottle, insert the clear tube into the tranny fill hole, and then push the handle of the pump down and it shoots the lube into the tranny. Repeat until the lube runs out of the fill hole.

The one I have......and I've had two or three of the $10 pumps all have two hoses. One comes out of the bottom of the pump, which goes into the bottle of fluid and a second hose at the top of the pump that goes into the tranny fill hole. All you do is put one hose (bottom) in the fluid bottle, the other (top) hose into the tranny fill hole and start pumping. The upstroke of the pump will fill the pump canister and the downstroke pushes it into the tranny.
It's pretty much the only way your going to change your fluid.
