that's it. tranny is done. going to get a rebuild at a reputable shop
(this shop has no signs, and doesn't advertise, only word of mouth from
folks in the know basically...I got lucky this guy is nearby)
1) tranny is now not engaging drive after coming to a stop from highway speeds
need to wait 3 minutes, or shift to 1st
2) need to use 1st gear to move, then it starts to function again
but it won't go into reverse, or allow me to engage 4wd lo
while in this state....until it is ready.
3) no real problems if only doing town speeds
4) lost my ability to creep at 1mph and slower for ultra-fine rock crawling, it now bumps and shudders.
problem is not getting better with time, only worse.
----
full Aisin 30-40LE 35000 rebuild is on tap. dropping off tomorrow.
sure it will cost me $$$$, but it is that, or junk it.
I cannot get rid of this woods-buggy I just can't. It's been mine since 1998

I just bought the B&M 70268 cooler for my 4runner and now I'm wondering if this will be enough to keep my tranny cool in Texas weather....Anyone else running this model in Texas or any other area where temps get over 100 degree...

why go through the motions and pain and possibly end up with
a junk transmission ?
a rebuild is going to be 100% good as new again. no guesswork.

new torque converter
new bands
new clutches (the old ones were fried badly, amazed it still worked)
all new seals and o rings (a huge mountain of them)
all new gaskets
blasted and powdercoated tranny housing
new solenoids
new filter of course (rust bucket central inside)
new pan
new dipstick and tube
---
runs and shifts mint. I mean mint.

I could have changed the radiator oh somewhere around 100,000 and avoided
this mess altogether
at least I got my woods buggy back !!!!!!! bought it in 1998 I am the sole owner
it was NASTY rust inside..and chunks of clutch and friction material missing. amazing it still ran somewhat nice
except no gear after stopping and have to force 1st to get rolling again

Installation was really simple. The kit includes about 2' of flexline and some hose clamps and couplers. It's simply a matter of removing the return line from the radiator and putting the cooler in series. I ended up buying ~ 4 extra feet so I could position the cooler in front of the AC condensor. Just be sure that you are using the return line from the radiator to the tranny. Run the truck for a few minutes. The return line should feel cool to the touch compared to the pressure line.

My cooler just let go this evening. I had no idea and the radiator looked newish. This one is very bad - I doubt I will be able to recover the transmission or the engine.
Wife was driving it home and she pulled off the highway to a cloud of steam as she stopped. Temp gauge pegged. She has no idea how long it had been that way but figured it was just a few seconds (yeah right.)
At the exit ramp it had spewed milkshake all over the engine, bad enough for me to think it was a catastrophic head gasket failure. Nope. Engine oil fine. Checked tranny fluid - dip stick looked good. I figured oil was being pushed into the cooling system and it was a head gasket afteral.
I let it cool and drove it 0.5 miles to a gas station. Let it cool again, checked the tranny dipstick - it was fine, added 1 3/4 liters of water, burped it, waited and started to drive the 3 miles home. I got about 1 more mile when the car started to miss fire and the tranny started to act weird. Pulled over, coolant spraying from the bottom of the radiator. I waited about 30 minutes and started it again to try and limp it home. It would only barely move forwards regardless of engine revs. I stopped about 0.1 miles later and shut it off. I got a tow the remaining 1.9 miles home, idling only after it had cooled down for a another 30 minutes.
Dip stick is foamy, no coolant in the radiator (it was coming out the bottom as quick as I was pouring it in the top) and it looks like the tranny is toast, or fingers crossed, the leak was so big that it pumped all the tranny fluid out onto the road and there isnt enough fluid for it to operate.
On top of all this, I really hope the engine is ok after the miss firing. I did stop it within seconds of feeling the miss fire. It seemed to idle smoothly later on, and reved ok when it had cooled. There was no black, blue or white smoke or steam coming out the exhaust, and it started fine each time.

yup, UKrunner, that is transmission death.
you might be able to drive it another 10,000 miles but you also may get stranded. if you want to keep the 4runner (and you'd be crazy not to) plan on saving $2500 and hunt for a reputable shop to rebuild trans. it will be good as new with correct AISIN parts. everything has to be replaced except gears. that means torque converter, gaskets, clutches, bands, o-rings (all eleventy billion of them) ...valves....
IF you buy a used tranny you MUST have it cracked open and see if that one too, was a milkshake that someone cleaned up and resold...it will be evident with an open-inspection on the clutches. maybe 150 dollars labor to have that inspected
Now if there was never any water in the tranny until that very day, you might get lucky and a 50 quart machine flush could do it.
didn't save mine though, just pushed the inevitable out by 8 months till she really left me hanging at stop lights.

If it buys me a few months - that time to save up for a 5 speed swap
From my research though, it seems the determining factory is how quickly you get the milkshake out. If you do it same or next day, there seems to be very little come back, but if you wait a few days or a week, that's when they fail later.

update.
4runner now 220,000 miles and never a bad peep from
my tranny rebuild. I now drive a 2013 Tacoma full time,
and the GF is using the 4runner as a winter buggy,
and I use it for woods duty (once I pay off the Taco, then
the Taco becomes the primary woods buggy...but not until then)
Gave the GF a 2010 Yaris as primary DD, but all she wants to do
is drive the 14+ year old 4runner. dammit !

How are you guys monitoring your transmission temps? I have a scan tool that I plug into my OBD port and I can see all the different values from various engine sensors (throttle position, timing, fuel trims, intake air temps, etc.) but nothing that shows transmission temp.
I also have a B&M transmission cooler that I haven't installed yet. At 200k miles, I also feel like I'm holding a grenade in my hands as well.
