My curiousity got the best of me......

Hey guys, I've just got a quick question here.... You know the Overdrive feature we have? Well I remember reading something about the fact that some people use it to slow down from hwy speeds instead of using the brakes.(let's say you see a cop while going 150 kms ----> not mph lol) I could understand that being ok but the thing that I've found myself doing lately (ok all the time) is switching it on and off alot. Yeah most hwy driving you'll have it on and for city, off. Iam just trying figure out if I go in between alot, will it hurt the tranny? Just for an example.... I drive 30 mins to get home from work and will turn it of and on about 5 times. Never when the motors going just fine but when I start building speed to go up to around 60 km/hr. Any advice or comments would be totally helpfull.

Won't hurt a thing. By turning off the O/D, you're just manually disengaging the overdrive gear, which forces the tranny to downshift. I drive that way all the time. I leave the O/D off when accelerating up steep grades to keep the RPM's up a bit longer, and also turn the O/D off when decelerating. This allows the engines compression to assist in slowing down.

I asked that basic question back in March. This was what people said then:
