Manual or Auto 3.4L same?
 

I'm on my quest right now, to locate me a 3.4L V6 to set where my 3.0 does now.

I've been calling around, and they're all telling me the manual or auto's are the same, and there is no diffrence in the crank, and I should be able to use one either way. I read on here and other sites there is a diffrence.

I'd like to know, cuz one of the local yards here, has a 3.4L out of a 98 4-runner with 20k miles on it, they say it runs great. But they don't wanna spend the time to dig it out, since it was a fairly bad wreck. But if I want it, they'll give me a good price on it, if I dig it out myself. Just curious if I wanna tackle this or not. Suck to go through all that trouble, and I can't even use it.

The only difference between the two would be the ECU's. Otherwise, the engines are identical. Someone may correct me if I am giving you misinformation, but AFAIK, this is correct.

Either will work but if you want to run an auto, get the ECU from one that had and auto too.

Chuki, where are you at? I no of a rolled 99' with only 42k on it. The engine and tranny are complete harness and all.

So there is no diffrence in engines when shoving them infront of my 5speed? I just need to get the ECU out of a manual or does it matter?

If anyone knows of a good deal on a 3.4. Lemme know. I don't have alotta cash to burn at all though. Right now I'm just keeping my eye out so I don't let a deal pass me by.

If you have a 5spd then you are in great shape and can use any 3.4L engine you fancy.
Make sure to get the entire wiring harness and ECU too.

My concern comes from this paragraph from ORS

If your vehicle has a 3VZ-E engine, this kit allows the use of your factory transmission - manual or automatic. The R150 (manual) and A340 (automatic) transmissions are nearly identical to the units placed behind a 5VZ-FE from the factory. If you are using a manual transmission, the 3.4L engine needs to come from a manual transmission vehicle. In SELECT year models we have found a difference in crankshaft machining from the factory. In these instances an engine from an automatic transmission application will not accept a flywheel or pilot bearing. If using an automatic transmission vehicle, you will only need to be concerned with matching the correct ECU and wiring. We do, however, recommend that you acquire all parts from the same donor vehicle.

It states I need to get a engine from one that was infront of a manual... In select years? What years??

Oh, well that makes sense. The select years would be 96-00 for an engine that came from a 4Runner and 95.5-03 for an engine that came from a Tacoma, since you can still get 5 Speeds with them.

If you get one that had a manual, you can be sure it will accept a pilot bearing, regardless of the year.
It is true, there are some cranks that don't accept a pilot bearing, but check before you purchase it.

when i was searching for my motor i ran into 1 or 2 motors that were from autos and didnt have the pilot bearing hole. 20K is great as long as the motor didnt get the mounts ripped on to bad to mes up were you would bolt on your mounts. mine had 30K and was from a '99 taco. Good Luck!

The one I'm looking at is from either a 97 or 98 Runner... They don't have it out, and like I said aren't sure they're gonna take it out. If they aren't I'd like to be able to make sure I could use the engine, and strike up a deal with them if I take it out myself.

But from what I read up a couple post, any 3.4L out of a Runner up to 00 should be fine, and Taco up to 03. I should be able to use?

Taco and 4runner motors up to and including 02 will work fine.
In 99 they made a design change so make sure the parts you get all match your motor.

Hello all, I'm new to the site and don't know alot about trucks or engines. I do love my 1st gen 4runner but I want to replace my original engine & tranny. Its an 89 with the 22re motor and auto transmission. Is it possible to swap my original engine for a newer motor (say 2nd gen 4runner) and if so can I put in a manual transmission instead of the automatic one I have. Everyone I've asked doesn't know and tells me to just rebuild what I got. If I have no other choice I guess I will but I really would love to make the change

ALL 3.4 MOTORS HAVE THE PILOT BEARING HOLE IN THE CRANK. I have a 14 year master Toyota mechanic friend that says with out a doubt in his mind all 3.4 have the pilot bearing hole.

The easiest way to be sure: LOOK AND SEE IF THERES A HOLE.
