Just Returned from 3500mi trip, Towing and MPG's

Well, just got home from my road trip to the great wilderness of Washington State. Drove up loaded, but no trailer. The trip home was again a loaded 'runner, but also with a 3500lb Bayliner in tow. I figure you guys would be interested in my gas mileage numbers with and without the boat behind.

Some real world Supercharged numbers:

Trip up -

Tank #1 - From Phx to Cali 18.6 mpg
65-70mph (heavy winds outside phx)

Tank #2- Southern California 19.1mpg
70-75mph

Tank #3 Mid. Cali to N. Cali 17.8mpg
75mph
(very heavy head winds, heavy rain, maintained speed)
Tank

Tank #4 N. Cali, S. Oregon, Mt. Shasta 18.0mpg
40-50mph
(Heavy Snowfall, Ice, slush, no chains)

Tank #5 S. Wash. to mid washington 20.8mpg (highest recorded during trip)
55-60mph (hitler like police in washington)

Trip Home To Phoenix *towing 3500lbs of boat*

I'll make this list shorter...as I made too many stops to list! :(

Ok, first tank towing turned out to be my best

Tank #1 Port Angeles to Olympia area 15.5 mpg
45-55mph (lots of black ice, slow going)

Tank #2 Olympia to Portland 15.4mpg
55mph

Tank #3-5 Portland -Redding,CA 10.5-11.5mpg
Had to chain up for the Siskiyou's (sp) and Shasta :(
20-30mph

Tank #6-7 Redding to L.A. 11.5mpg
Heavy winds
65mph

Tank #8 L.A. to Phx 15.0
75-80mph (hehe, eat that fullsizer's :) )

Overall I have to say I was extremely impressed with the performance of my 4runner. I could pull any hill I wanted at least at 50mph and most at 65+ if I wished. My temperature never moved, and I got no engine lights the entire trip. My favorite part was the reaction of the guys in the HD Chevy's and SD fords watching me pass them (on dry passes, there are serveral) as they struggled to keep 45mph up the hills with they're winnebego's (sp) and atv's in tow. I could pretty much pick how fast I wanted to go, but my mileage suffered just as quickly as the SC spooled up. :D

The rough parts of the trip -
blown tire on the way down the Siskiyou's RR Tire completely gone! - truck handled the blow-out amazingly well, very stable down to a stop. I think a semi threw a re-tread at me - tire was cut in two!...and it happened as I was passing one.

Towing in the snow- Yes it can be done, very very carefully!

however- the chains I bought for the Runner are a bit large (like climbing Mt. Everest large) but thats all that Sears had that fit my rig. ( I was hoping to return them in the event I didn't use them) Anyways, they did scrape the inner most part of my fender flares just a bit. :( :pat:

Gas Prices!!!????

How do you guys in CA do it? Holy Cow $1.99 a gallon!!! OUCH!

Drivers!

I know I don't need to say much, but I will say this.

I now know that every major manufacturer makes a "racing" version of their normally docille grocery getting sedans. I know this because a few of the select young drivers made it painfully evident that they thought I-5 is the Indy 500. Many near wrecks were observed from these *$&^%*&$^*&$.

Good Stuff!!
I got my (new to me) boat home! Pics to come tomorrow.

PhxTRDRunner,

Glad you had a safe trip. Those are pretty good numbers for an S/C'd & loaded down Runner. Very detailed in your note-taking too, I might add. :)

If you want to ship your s/c up here, I can throw it in my 4Runner & take some road trip notes for you from Canada. "grin" :D

I still have s/c envy, obviously..

Al

Great notes phx!
I had a trip to winston salem (about a 2hr trip) so the tank wasn't completely empty when I got there so there was a little around town driving in the mix, but I was only getting 17.3mpg. I was going 80-85 though, there was an extremely hot chick in a new taco with an arb!!! serving as my rabbit, I couldn't resist. :D

Nice boat man! Did you just buy it and thats why you took the road trip?
this is what I drive... its got a 7.4l 454 in it though... she tops out at 52mph

Yup, thats why I made the trip :)

BTW- badass boat!! mine is no speed demon, but it'll do the fishing/ski'n thing just great. I do have a bit of work to do on it..and chance you have a hook up on boat stuff?

Mohamed 01-02-2003 12:23 PM

Okay I know I am getting nosey here, but how much did you pay for the boat and how did you find out about the sale, especially it being 4 states away...geez  .

But definitly a nice boat, will that pull a skier? (oops never mind saw the above post on this question)

Good lord...that's still a long drive, how did you keep your time occupied, did you have a co-pilot?

The tire that blew out, what size and brand?

What's your blood type? :D (that's just for kicks)

Okay enough nosey questions...hehe :D .:D

PhxTRDRunner 01-02-2003 12:37 PM

Haha, no problem :)

Ok, first, the boat was my fathers..and put simply, made me a deal I couldn't refuse. I am positive it'll pull ski'ers 'cause it did many-a-times when I lived up north.

Entertainment- I have a dvd/tv tuner/7 inch LCD...lets time go by quickly, and yes I also had a passenger..though I did all the driving, especially towing :)

-went through all 16 dvd's I brought with!

Blown Tire- I think it is the stock tire "Goodyear Wrangler RT/S 265/70/16" - found a replacement for 40 bux used....there were 0 new ones in either WA or OR, go figure.

Blood type- honestly I don't know?? Maybe I should?

Phx,

Thats some pretty cool stats. Makes me want to buy a SC and a boat to tow! ;)
