JDM Swap 5VZFE using newer fuel injectors?
I'm finishing up a JDM swap into my 1996 Tacoma 4WD 3.4L 5VZFE. The JDM motor is newer than 2000, due to it having fins on the driver's side cam cover.
I left the JDM intake manifold, fuel rail and injectors on the new engine.
I've heard that there is some difference between the early and late model injectors.
It runs smoothly but I'm noticing it being a bit sluggish on acceleration. I'm going to clean the mass air-flow sensor tonight to see if that helps, but I'm wonding if my ECU is having a problem with the late-model injectors.
Another question about the JDM swap:
- The oil light would flicker at low rpm's. I added 1/2 quart to bring it to a total of 5.5 and the light now stays out. I'm using the JDM oil pressure sending unit. I also moved the oil filter location to the forward location and used the blanking plate on the rear port on the block. Used my original oil pan and pickup tube from the '96.
Thanks for any advice...

For the record, and to help any future 5VZFE JDM swaps, the lower timing cover / fan mount has to be swapped over from the original motor or the accessory belts will not line up with the crank pulley.
To summarize, here's what I used from my 1996 5VZFE on the post-2000 5VZFE:
- oil pan
- changed oil filter location to front position
- crank pulley
- fan pulley
- lower timing cover / fan mount
- air intake / throttle body
- all accessories
- ECU
What I used from the JDM engine:
- long block (block, heads, cams, cam covers left intact)
- top timing cover / timing components / water pump
- intake manifold / fuel rail / injectors
- oil pressure sending unit (jury is still out on this, oil light flickers on low rpm)
- oil pump

I too am considering this. My main concern is that starting in ’99, there was a change to the number of teeth on the crankshaft that the position sensor… senses.
As I understand it, the number of teeth was increased to address a radio interference issue caused by EMI produced at lower RPMs. A few extra teeth were added to increase the frequency and eliminate the issue.
So it seems that a post ‘99 engine would not get along with a pre ’99 ECU. But, the JDM engines are most always listed to fit ’96 to ’02 applications.
Any thoughts?

Edit: I got lazy and did not check beyond 2001.

Good thought! It actually lists the same number through 2004.
