Interior LED Conversion Tips and Tricks

Okay so after spending hours searching through old threads I still have some unanswered questions. Ill start by descibing what I want to do. I have a 99 4runner 4wd and I want to change the Gauge cluster(including blinkers), AC control panel, Ignition ring, shifter, footwell, window switch, and other misc. lights (i.e. Hazard and rolldown). Im going to use Blue leds. From what I've seen so far the bulbs used are the 194 and the 74.

Here are my questions to you:
1. What bulbs did you use on your swap (inverted, focused, oval, etc.)
2. How many bulbs of each kind are needed for this swap
3. What bumps did you hit along the way
4. Total estimated time for swap

Thanks for your help :D

If you dont mind ....I have the same question but for a 93 runner 4x4

I've attempted this and failed........... I've used the inverted LEDs from superbrightleds.com LEDs project lights forward, not sideways. I put them in the dash and it looks VERY spotty and did not look right at all. So I just gave up :( color was blue BTW. I left some in, like my glovebox, shift indicator and ignition halo

I have done part of what your asking about, I've got blue LEDs in the aircon panel and in most interior switch's.

Not sue if my aircon panel is the same as yours, but on mine it was a straightforward swap for all the buttons, remove existing led and in with the new one.
The switches were a lot more involved, I could not find any availability of led replacement bulbs for these, plus most of them do not appear to be designed to be replaceable. I dismantled them and soldered in an led and resistor into each, not fun, very limited space and fiddly to dismantle and reassemble.

Heres all you need to know.

Buy some LED's

Wire them in,

Use this Math to figure out what resistor you need to put inline on the + Side of the LED

R=(Vs - Vf) / If

R is the resistor rating in Ohms
Vs is the Power Supply in this case 12Volt

Vf is Forward Voltage
If is Forward Current This info can be found on the back of the LED
package or the tech data sheets for the LED's

Another thing you should note is you should get your soldering pen GOOD and HOT, the max solder time for LED's is around 3 seconds or you risk cooking the diode.

Heres a Funky little Free Electronic Tool that will help you do the math.

Good Luck have fun.

okay, i finally got it done, heres what you need for a 1999 4runner
Ignition halo- (1) 74 led
Air Con Panel- (2)74 led
Cluster in radio bezel(includes ETC and Window switch)- (2) 3mm leds and resistors, soddered on

Havent started the gauges or window switches

The light for the ECT (you said ETC but I'm pretty sure you meant ECT), is it a seperate bulb or is it lit up by the same bulb as the others. The right side of my A/C gauges are very dim and the window button doesn't light up at all...is there a seperate bulb for the window button too?

Sorry to hijack, but I've been trying to figure this out for quite some time now.
