I'm starting to rethink my plans
I had all these great things I wanted to do with my 4Runner, but now I'm starting to think the money I was going to spend would be a bad investment. I've got a 2 wheel drive 95, and it will never be a fully capable off-road vehicle. I was planning on putting on 33's, regearing, then getting a locker.
Now I'm thinking that in a few years I'll probably want to sell my 4Runner and get a doublecab tacoma or tundra. I would still do all that stuff if I thought that when I went to resell it the value would be a little higher because of the mods... I just don't think that I'll get back any of the money I invest. If someone is looking fora truck with all those mods they aren't going to want a 2wd. The layman off the street that isn't looking for such things won't be willing to pay extra for extra clearance or other off-roading stuff.
Does this make sense or should I just go for it anyways...
Thanks,
Keith

Sell it!
I would recommend not doing the mods.
Get your money out of it and put it down on an end of the year/end of current model Tacoma and take advantage of Toyota's special interest rates.
Good luck!

my thoughts
are, IF you really want to know,, most people do not wheel SUV`s, so the mods just "might" a waist WHEN you do decide to sell, but will be worth it while you have it, and like you said, IF someone was looking for a rig with the "mods" they will prob. want it to be a 4 wheel drive, so, id say hold on to the cash, put it aside, as if you are going to do the mods, and when you get your Tacoma or Tundra, you will have some cash for the mods on your NEW toy.

I too suffer your dilemma. I have a 2wd Prerunner and I've been wondering the same thing. I should have looked for one with the locker but I had no knowledge of such things back then.
If I had only found this site sooner :pat:
However, thanks to a bad experience with a Dodge lemon I got from a small dealership with an "as-is" policy (I know I know....trust me I learned my lesson), I cant even consider trading this truck in for a long time. So I may look into adding a locker or something later on.....when the $$$$ is available of course

Well, I should be able to break even if I sell my 4Runner outright in a year and a half or so. Then I'll take out a personal loan and maybe get a slightly used 4x4 Tacoma and still have some money left over for some mods on it.
I just wish I knew if I'd be better off to just save that money I'd spend on stuff for my 4Runner, or if when I went to sell it I'd be able to get some of that cash back.

I've decided to get the best of both worlds. I'm going to go ahead and focus more on stereo equipment than on off-road enhancements. When I go to sell the 4Runner I can pull my new headunit, and speakers out and put the stuff I have in it now back in.
This way I'll still have an awesome ride AND I'll be able to keep the stuff I buy now for my next truck.
