i need help!!!!

im trying to install my front cornfed spacers and i cant get the back top nut of the shock off. the other 2 were a lot easier but for some reason that back nut is really tight and i cant get any tools back there to break it loose. any suggestions?????????????? :wtf: :wtf: :wtf:

r0cky 05-25-2004 09:09 PM

i had the same problem when i was doing my spacer lift .... the best thing i know to recommend is spraying some liquid wrench on there, letting it sit for awhile, and then just keep trying at it with a normal wrench. on one side, i was able to push on it with my foot while i was wedged in the wheel well. ;)

i'm sure others will have better suggestions. sometimes just taking a break and going back out and trying again works.

airforce131 05-25-2004 09:35 PM

yeah, im going to try it again in the morning when im not so MAD. the back was easy....and the front would be just as easy if it wasnt for these 2 bolts. theres hardly any room to get a wrench back there.

r0cky 05-25-2004 10:07 PM

i know what you mean. i skinned my knuckles badly on that part. just stick with it and i know you'll get it. :)

ratchet

Mad Chemist 05-26-2004 08:55 AM

PB blaster and a little heat (not at the same time though, don't want to start a fire!!!)

airforce131 05-26-2004 07:45 PM

ok so i got those 2 bolts off...............now i cant get the bolts that are on top of the shock off!!!! i mean its really tight. the wrench keeps slipping off. anyone got any suggestions? im starting to get pissed.

r0cky 05-26-2004 07:55 PM

hold the top with a vice grip or pliers and turn that in one direction ... then turn the nut with a wrench in the opposite direction. you'll have to have the pressure of the coil off of it though before you can loosen it. have you compressed the spring?

airforce131 05-26-2004 07:59 PM

yes the srping is compressed.....and im doing the vise grip and wrench thing. its just so tight. i might just take it into a shop tomorrow and have them knock it loose.

r0cky 05-26-2004 08:02 PM

if you have a friend nearby, you can get them to turn the wrench one way while you turn the vise grip the other direction. mine was horribly tight as well, but when i asked my brother to turn the vise grip, i was able to loosen the nut with my wrench pretty easily. then again, there's no harm in getting a shop to knock it loose for you.

airforce131 05-26-2004 08:03 PM

what would a shop do different than what im doing? i hope the other isnt as tight.

r0cky 05-26-2004 08:05 PM

i have no idea what a shop would do differently - you just mentioned that you might take it in to get them to break it loose for you, so i was just saying that could always be an option. :)

airforce131 05-26-2004 08:12 PM

this sounds like a really stupid question but.....what size was your nut at the top of the shock? im using an 11/16....seems to fit good but keeps sliding off when i put a lot of pressure on it when i try to loosen it. thanks

r0cky 05-26-2004 08:16 PM

oh gosh, i don't remember, i'm sorry! i am almost sure, though, that it was either a 12mm nut or a 14mm nut.

try the next size smaller ... if that fits tighter, then try that, but if the only one you can get to fit is the 11/16, and it slides off, you may have a stripped nut (in which case there's a very good reason you're having trouble loosening it - i would be too!) :) does it look like it might be rounded around the edges? (the nut, i mean)

airforce131 05-26-2004 08:19 PM

yeah the nut is sort of rounded but not enough to make it strip like that.........i think what im doing wrong is using 11/16 instead of a millimeter wrench. ill try that tomorrow....its too late to go shopping now. tomorrow will be day 3 of this cornfed spacer installation. haha

r0cky 05-26-2004 08:26 PM

don't worry about how long it takes - it took me about a week and a half to putter around and finish my revtek lift.

well ... bad thing is, if you're using the 11/16 and it's too big, you have probably rounded the nut enough that you'll need some other method of getting it off.

let me know what you find out. :)

airforce131 05-26-2004 08:28 PM

thanks for your help man....ill let you know when i get it all on. im going to post some pics when its done.

r0cky 05-26-2004 08:33 PM

well, and shoot me a PM if you think there's anything i might be able to answer for you. :)

also, post here when you try a metric wrench on the nut and lemme know how that works!

hang in there!

kford 05-26-2004 09:27 PM

take lots of drugs, then try it. it calms me down but also gives me adrenaline so i can push harder.

airforce131 05-27-2004 07:25 AM

lol, sounds like a good idea kford......the only thing is i work with missiles everyday and drugs and explosives dont work together to well.
