hub nut socket
 

does anyone have an "extra", "Not needed" hub nut socket for the front axels that will fit my 87 4runner? I think it is 52mm, 1/2 drive would be perferable but 3/4 would be ok too.

trip to Sears it out of the question $800. round trip flight to get to the nearest one:eeek: and 2 days travel.

Doesn't the mail deliver there? Mine is a 54mm or 2 1/8". It was 22.99 at Sears. Are you sure you need a 52mm and not a 54mm? Now I'm second guessing if 54mm is right...

If you want I can pick one up for you and ship it to you. Not sure how much shipping would be, it weighs less than a pound (the ones I get are OTC brand, 1/2" drive). I'll find out the cost for the socket, used to be close to $20.

Every time I have taken the large nut off, I use channel locks. The nut is not on very tight at all because it would bind the bearing. Just mark the location with a scrib on the nut and use channel locks to remove.

This is not the recommended procedures in taking that large nut off, the channel lock pliers have the tendency to round off the corner of the nut. You need the right tool for the right job, you can't use channel lock pliers to torque the nut to its specification, you still need the 54MM nut to make torquing and installation easier. Let us work smarter not harder. Yeah sure, it is easy to mark the nut with a scribe but if you lost count when turning that nut, then your SOL big time, not to mention that channel lock pliers will give a busted knuckles if it happen to slip off the nut, ouch!!! Time for a band-aid. Take it from the pro.

Yoda, If is not too much hastle I will take you up on it! I wanted to do it the right way instead of the channel locks because I really want to do it to speck! but now I am seccond guessing the size!

What is the proper torque? Everytime I have removed one of those nuts it is BARLEY more that hand tight. The channel locks are just to get the nut turning. That is why I never bought one of the sockets. I know that nut on front wheel drive cars is very tight though. This is just the way I was taught and have never had a problem. Between 50-60k miles on both trucks I adjusted bearings this way.

while doing some research for my upcoming front axle rebuild(SOON!), i had a friend go to schucks and ask if they had a 54mm socket for a toyota wheel bearing. to my suprise, they did, for 8.99 no less!

54mm for my 2nd gen.

Torque spec for my 85 (non IFS, yours may be different)

Torque nut to 43 ft lbs while rotating hub both directions (this seats the bearings)

Back the nut off 1 full turn

Torque the nut to 18 ft lbs while rotating hub

put on lock tab

Torque the locking nut to 33 ft lbs

bend over lock tab

My NAPA used to have it for less than $15, they are now priced at $37 (for the OTC 6612). Had him check the price and he said it is correct. The other sizes were still the lower prices.

I bought a 2 1/8" Crows foot at a flea Market awhile ago for a couple bucks.

Do you think this will work instead of a socket?

Also, when I change my rotors, should I change the bearings? They have ~130K on them, and I'm sure the previous owner hasn't touched them.

Yoda, Tool desk Emailed me back and quoted about $6 for shipping doesn't seem that bad. Have you checked yet? if not I can go with them. They seem pretty cool!

Go for it David. I didn't go any further as their price was about the best around. Their shipping sounds great too.

I went out and bought that 2-1/8" socket yesterday. Picked it up at Sears after driving around to the local AutoZone, Kragen, Ace. None of them had it, the largest they had was 2".

I had called Sears prior to going to all the local shops and made the mistake of asking for a 54mm socket, which they checked and verified that they didnt' have, but after checking online I saw that they did carry a 2-1/8" socket

Since this is technically a 54mm and 2-1/8" socket, I think it should be labled that way.

Oh, and I removed the 54mm nuts off the spare front end I aquired quite easily, they weren't torqued down at all.
