How much oil does the manual transmission hold?

I know this may have been discussed in the forums, however I cannot seem to find anything conclusive on a manual transmission. So to replace the fluid with MT-90 (or any oil for that matter) in the manual transmission how much should I buy? Thank you in advance...

Do you have your owners manual?
I've heard 2.1qts but can't remember where or how reliable that was.
The auto's take about 5qts IIRC.

the writeup i used when i did all the fluids under the chassis was:

Bob even has the 5speed like i do, too!
good luck,
scott

i forgot to add, when i did my fluids, i filled the level up to the fill hole, until some started coming out. came out to about the right capacity...

From my Haynes for 4runner 96-00
and Tacoma 95-00

For drain and refill...

four bangers: 2.7 qts
3.0 V6: 3.2
3.4 V6: 2WD: 2.7
4WD: 2.3

And I second the right amount is when it starts to leak out the fill plug. I over fill a little bit too, tends to make the "notchi-ness" a bit better...I just jacked her up on the drivers side a bit and added a little more than an eighth of a quart. I also used MT-90 and I do like it so far..

Great! thanks guys...only 2.3 quarts seems like a little bit for that tranny but, hey, glad its less and not more.

and would the redline MTL work ok for the differentials, and T-Case?

It looks like the MTL is 70w-90. If it was me I would get the 75w-90 or 80w-90 gear oil. Different stuff if you read about it on Redlines' web page.
You need a 24mm 6 point 1/2" drive socket.
Also, on filling these (including your manual tranny) you:
1) make sure the truck is level
2) undo the fill plug
3) undo the drain plug
4) let drain
5) put your drain plug back in
6) fill until it starts coming out the fill hole, this will indicate that it is full to capacity
It is easier than changing oil
It also helps to have a fluid/oil pump that screws right on to the new fluid container. I did all my diffs and txfer case in about 45 min with the pump.
I always buy more fluid than I need and either save it or return the full unused bottles. I HATE making 2 trips to do a project when the car I am working on is out of commission (big PITA when you only have one car).
Just a note: all the fluid capacities in the owners manual are WAY off, if that is where Haynes got the info. I would be surprised if it only uses 2.3 qts, that seems a bit low to me. I would buy at least 4 qts if it was me. Comparitively speaking, I can easily put 2.3 qts of MTF in an Acura Integra (1.8 L 4 cyl). In my Acura Legend (3.2 L V6) I put in about 3.5 qts of MTF.

When I drained my tranny (I have the 2.7 liter tacoma, so 2.7 qts for me) I have a bucket that has measurements. Mine was just a hare under the 3 qt mark after draining, and I overfilled a bit from the change before, so I would say that the manual is pretty darn close...

I did open the fill plug first and checked the level of fluid there before the drain and it was topped off...it's hard to compare to an Acura or any vehicle because they are all designed differently. My taco takes 5.7 qts of oil, compared to some full size pickups which take around 4...

But yes the correct capacity is when it's coming out the fill plug

stir_fry_boy 07-30-2009 11:55 AM

Wow, at least they got some of the fluid capacities right in the owners manual.
I was only giving a comparison as a matter of size, nothing else. I would think there should be a correlation between size and capacity....
You sparked my interest: what full size pickup takes only 4 qts of oil?
