Maybe just change the location the fmu connects to the lighting circuit?
I'll take a look at the FSM diagrams and see if I can figure something out...

Wondering if the stock wire itself is too small of a gauge...

wire gauge would'nt be too small on it's own toyota would have allowed for that... it's most likely that the fmu attaches to the auto dim circuit at a different point for one thing... the extra draw of the new HU may also be affecting the circuit. The auto dim function is load dependent.

I picked up a couple of the Field Monitor Units the last time I was in New Zealand back in 2012, they came out of two different models of HiLux Surf's contemplating selling one as I have one installed in my 98, but have been playing around with another 3rd gen maybe a 2002 so I don't have to do so many mods!

I just stumbled across this ad and figured I'd post it if any of you are interested. It's grey/blue in color and has the sunroof controls:

I got one of these and put it in my 84 4runner. I have a couple questions though. Wiring is not new to me, but the monitor is simply not working like it should. The compass does not work, the function the speedo is tied to does not work, and as far as I know the tilt gauge is not working. The Temp control is working propertly and if I push the compass calibration button it will flash the compass symbols, but that is about it.
I've hooked up 12v constant, 12v switch, ground, speedo signal (12v 4ppr) and the two outside air temp sensors wires. As mentioned the air temp works just fine and is reading accurately.
I tested it on the bench and was not able to get the tilt gauge to work, but figured that maybe it needed the speed sensor wire or something like that. Just as the compass needs.
I did not hook up any of the dimming wires, but could easily hook them up to either 12v or ground. I'm not sure what they take as the schematic I received doesn't state it and I don't have the service manual for the vehicle it came out of.
What fucntionality were you guys able to get out of it when testing it on the bench? Hooking up grounds and 12vconstant/switch? I'm not sure if I have a bad unit or if there's another wire that has to be hooked up that isn't obvious. I definitely don't want to randomly be hooking up wires.
Thanks for any input. I can supply any additional details if needed.

There is some wiring diagrams, however the info is limited. It is not a real wiring diagram that you would find in a service manual. Does anyone have the service manual from a vehicle with one of these in it? If there is no tilt then how come it shows 90-45-0-45-90? Maybe I'm missing something. Granted by the time it registered 45 you'd already be close to topplying over.
What kind of functionality do you guys see when bench testing these prior to installation?
Really, the only thing I've managed to get to work on mine is the temp and lights.

90-45-0-45-90 is for the compass. the monitor's compass needs to be calibrated by going around in circles a few times after installation
another feature is the speed wherein the bars or lines move faster as your speed increases.
there's also an altimeter/barometer.

Thanks for the info! I'll have to try going around in circles to see if that works. I did see that in a post someone had made with the user guide photos. I did notice from a post that the speed signal has to be hooked up for the compass to work.
Do you know what signal the speed feature takes? I'm currently feeding it a 4 pulse per revolution (12v) signal that is also fed to the ECU. I know the signal is good because I have a mileage gauge that also reads off of it.
I'll have to check the altimeter/barometer readings a little closer next time I take it out.
You don't have the FSM for your vehicle with the wiring diagrams? That would be of HUGE help for hooking up a couple other things and see if some of the wires are going off 12v or ground. Most wiring info here simply says dimmer wire/circuit, but doesn't specify much else. Also the actual wiring diagrams would be able to tell me a bit more about the speed signal as well.
