High pitch squeal on start up?
Hello all,
Have a '00 4Runner SR5 with about 150K on it.
I've noticed for the last few months a high pitch squeal on start up. This happens in the morning (parked in the garage) and also when it is raining out. The squeal lasts about 2 or 3 seconds as I drive or get the rpms up and then doesn't happen again. Sometimes I will hear it very faintly when idling at a light but this situation only happens when it is raining.
Thanks for any thoughts or help!

loose belt? mine was squeaking when i was water fording last night. then today i tightened the alternator belt up and it stopped squeaking. your belts must be worn out

My alternator belt does the same thing. Some toothpaste rubbed on it is a quick fix, it gives it a little grit. Brake fluid works well too, it slightly dissolves the belt making it a little sticky.
This is only for when you are waiting for a new one, or when you are cheap like me

Belt Dressing doesn't last long. The only fix is to tighten them or to buy new ones. You are talking about $30 to replace all 3 belts. Best thing to do is to replace the belts. Should take you no more than 2 HRS.
