Gas mileage poor on a 2.7L...Why?

Just picked up my Tacoma a couple of weeks ago and the gas mileage sucks big time.
I haven't measured the miles per gallon but the gauge goes down real quick.
I'm hoping it's the gauge.The gauge doesn't register at the full mark on a fill up.
The needle goes between 3/4 and full but drops to half about 60 miles later..:bang:
Will have to record the mileage and do the math the next fill.
I had a problem with power when I picked it up at the dealer.
They cleaned the throttle plate and she ran great.

If not the gauge what would cause bad mileage.:help:

My guage always drops to half way pretty quickly. You need to figure out what your actual mpg is before you assume your getting bad mileage.

You should find some info in this thread that might help to compare. I am sure there are others as well.

Just did the mileage on my '04 4X4 Tacoma, and it gave me 19.4 on the first tank, combined driving, and 23.4 on the second tank, mostly highway.

I get about 21-23MPG from my 4runner with a 2.7 .
