Gas Mileage Again
 

With Gas Prices so high I thought this might be an issue on some peoples mind. At over $2 a gallon here in CA, my 4runners costing me a mucho $$$ for gas. I average 12 MPG. Im going to probably change the fuel filter very soon. 110,000 and Im not sure if its ever been done(with so called lifetime filter). I will probably look into the O2 sensor after that and maybe the cat. I just bought some Aisins on ebay that might help some.
What I was really wondering is if these Fuel Atomizers really work or not. Anyone have experince with one on a 3.0. I'd love to know if it helped and how much. Any other suggestion are welcome too. These gas prices are killing me Larry! Ray blurpps@msn.com

Don't focus on quick fixes like fuel atomizers....it is all hocus pocus. :pat:

Work on making sure the engine and drivetrain are maintained in tip top shape.

On the engine, this includes putting in new plugs, cap, rotor, air filter (consider a K&N replacement), fuel filter, replace your O2 sensor, send your injectors out to be ultrasonically cleaned (or just run some seefoam through there.....but not as good), clean the throttle body, adjust your air flow meter and throttle position sensor and perhaps gain a bit more power (and thus mileage too!....yes I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but it does work) by opening up (ie cutting out) the bottom of your airbox to minimize air flow restriction.

On the drivetrain, you should make sure all joints, driveshafts, etc are all greased properly. You might also consider running Amsoil fluids in the tranny and diffs. Finally pump up your tires to max psi (about 35 usually) and ensure the tires are wearing properly (if not have it checked for an alignment).

If you got a roof rack and dont use it, take it off. I heard as much as 2mpg difference. Also make sure your aligment is close too.

Thanks for the replys, I just replaced the the plugs, wires, cap a month ago. I also have an FIPK. I really dont know how to adjust the airflow meter and throttle position sensor but I'll look into it. I also have a roof rack but Im not sure Im ready to let it go.

give your runner a good tune up. plugs wires, oil and filter (i use valvoline 10-w30 durablend and an STP filter), air filter and fuel filter, and get a can of bg 44k and put in your gas. I just checked my 93 runner the other day and i was getting about 18.5mpg and i like to hit the gas to hear my exhaust. oh and on a side note do all of the tune up goodies and disconnect your battery for about ten minutes, hook it back up and let you ecu reset. thats what i did to mine and it also will make your engine feel much more crisp. I also noticed increase in mileage when i put on my new exhaust ( not huge amount but good excuse to the wife to get one). hope this helps.

I get the same mileage on my Runner...I've got a few mods but the only ones that would make a difference would be the Rock Crawlers and my system which weighs about 150 pounds all together. Other than that...12 is the best I've been able to get, oh wait sorry...12.3!! :D

I get 15. Cause I'm a damn leadfoot. I cannot help it. I try, but it doesn't work. !8 would be great.

When i first bought it about 5 months ago i was only getting about 13mpg. So i just did a tuneup(a full tune up not just plugs and wires) and the power and mpg went way up. I am a stickler for a clean smooth running car. It pays off in the long run.

I just paid under $29 to fill up my truck but I am getting a solid 18mpg so I won't complain to loud since the people in Cali might hear me.

The worst I've gotten is 24 (in town or not). The best so far is 27, no air on, no headlights on to get that. I'm experimenting with staying at or below 70 MPH on my work drive plus easy on the gas when at the on ramp and passing. Actually is stress relieving as I pass no one hardly. :laugh: I drive 85 miles a day and have 50,000 + miles on my 2002. Tubb

yeah but 2 wheel drive is a whole nother story. they dont ever compare with 4 wheel drive mileage

Ok, in my experiment I have hit a little over 30 mpg running at 68 mph and taking it easy and shifting early. I know it's 2 wheel drive but did not expect that. :drink: Tubb

In my '94 P/U, I have averaged 16 MPG over the last four fills.

I'm proud of my truck. This past weekend, I drove out to Ocotillo Wells (around 95 miles) with a completely full tank of gas, and a quad and a bunch of other crap in the back. I froaded the crap out it, for a day and a half, keeping up with buggies. I then drove back home and still had a quarter tank left.

I filled it up today and calculated milage, and I got 23 mpg.

I brought out a 5 gallon gas tank, and ended up using it for my dad's truck. I thought that offroading would waste a lot more gas than it did.

So, in conclusion: 22RE is the way to go.
