Front Mudguards!

Not sure if anyone's seen this yet or not, but there was discussion before about Toyota finally coming out with front mudguards for the 3rd gen. I was checking out some stuff on Romania, and here they are! I know a lot of people were interested in these so I thought I'd post it.

I'm curious... What do I get for the $90 difference in price between these and the $10 flaps at G.I. Joe's?

calrockx May 12, 2003 10:19 PM

nice. not $100 nice, but i need some front mud guards. i thought there were some hard kind, like in the back, but for the front? not the soft kind like in the picture, anyone have those? i want to take off the tube steps on mine, but i'd like some protection from rock chips and all that crap

I guess they are good if you have stock tires and wheels. they would only over about 3/4 of the tire width on mine and leave about 3-4 inches of lug hanging out so I would still have the same problem. I should have taken the ones off my wifes Tacoma before she got rid of it, they would have been free.

Anybody try to take a stock set of rear mudflaps off a 2nd gen and put them on the front of a 2nd gen???

I've had several pickups (same body style as 2 gen 4R) which al had front mud flaps originally. In Holland they were OEM fitted, even on the most basic 4WD vehicle.
But I've eaten them all up with my front wheels while backing up in mud. So they don't do any good if you'r a frequent off roader.
I think I still have one or two OEM sets in my shed.
Here's a pic so you'll see I'm not pulling your leg.

I agree that $100 is quite pricy for a pair of flaps. I just wanted to point them out anyway as I think I remember at least a few people have expressed that they wanted a factory look as opposed to cut Tacoma flaps. Hopefully these will start popping up in other places or on eBay and be much cheaper than that.

I went by GI Joe's today. $8.99 and about 40 minutes got me these: (click the pics for larger versions)

Yes... I have brake dust issues. I need rotors. :(

For those with 2nd gens buy a cheap set of flaps, I got my from jc whitney $20, and cut them to shape. If you know someone with a pickup just trace over theirs or get a good picture of one off the internet.

ok, i know this thread is really, really, old, but Im looking for stock front mudflaps for my 2000 4runner sr5. Anyone know where I can get them? Cant wait to lose the running boards, but im not taking them off until i have something to protect the paint. Thanks!

Roadtripr Jan 30, 2005 11:02 AM

I guess it depends on what fender flare you have. I have the black fender flares and when removing the running boards I end up with a good piece missing. The only thing that so far looks nice are the regular mudflaps from toyota (you can find them on JA runner website under additions)
Toyota part numbers :
00547-35966DF (driver side)
00547-35961PF (passenger side)

http://www.top4runners.com/ja/index.html (scroll down the page)
you might need a different model as you have silver fender flares

dibble9012 Jan 30, 2005 11:12 AM

Yea, I already looked at that website. i have the a 2000 4runner sr5 with the color keyed flares, that dont cut off at the bottom, but round off to the body at the bottom.

Roadtripr Jan 30, 2005 11:50 AM

In that case I would just fabricate something like midiwall did up above

X-AWDriver Jan 30, 2005 02:08 PM

My Runner never had Running boards so it already had the front flaps in place and they fit right up to the black SR5 flares perfectly and sometimes that's worth the price to some people since the cheapo $10 flares do look like an afterthought but still do the same job.
I had Bushwacker flares on my '97 and I went with plain flaps and they looked fine but molded flaps do look better.

I agree, but I don't know what is available for the colored 2000+ flares.

dibble9012 Jan 30, 2005 02:34 PM

The 2000 runner's with color keyed flares had the option to come with or without running boards, right?

Dibble,
My '01 SR5 came with the silly little hard rubber "splash guards". They were utterly useless and allowed rocks to ping the rocker panels at will. I think it took me a month or two after purchase to bite the bullet and buy a set of new Tacoma 4WD V6 front mud flaps. They work absolutely perfect at keeping rocks away from the rocker area and keep most mud and other crap slung by my REVOs away from the sides of the truck. I believe I had to drill one hole in each of the mudflaps, but the two other ones lined up just fine. They've held up for 85,000 miles and nearly 4 years. If I really needed to remove them for slogging through the mud, 3 minutes with a 10mm socket and they're off. Tough to see here, but you get the picture:

so did my year of 4runner come with the option of running boards, but if there were no running boards, there were no flares? I just cant find anywhere mudflaps for my 4runner version with flares. Heres my 4runner, you can see I have large flares, I need mudflaps for the front, that match the flares, and the mudflaps in the back.

Dibble,
Not sure on all the flare/mudflap/running board combinations, but I'm pretty sure you could get the Taco flaps to work great, regardless of your flares.

I think my rocker sills have maybe two rock chips - after all these miles!
