Finally!
I finally have a day off from work so I can knock out some projects I've wanted to do. On tommorow's list:
Airbox Elbow Removal Intake Silencer Removal Deckplate Airbox Mod (Maybe?) Can't wait. Wish me luck. I'll post my results. |
Good luck!
BUT! If you're doing the deckplate, I would _not_ pull the elbow. If you do, then when you close the deckplate (for water crossings, etc) then you'll still have an open hole into the airbox. :) Have fun! |
Well, had to run to Home Depot to get some tools I needed and ran by the muffler store to get the pipe specially made. Mod turned out well. I held off on the deckplate mod. Saving that for another day. Even with just the removal of the sliencer I can feel a definate gain in torque around 3000rpm as well as a nicer sound. Overall very pleased and special thanks to Dr. Zhivago for the great write-up in the tech section.
Here's a pic of the new mod installed: http://andrewgldn.home.mindspring.com/P5221164.JPG And closer: http://andrewgldn.home.mindspring.com/P5221163.JPG I am going to get the piece powder-coated as soon as I get the time to avoid rust. |
I wanted to get an intake pipe like that for my 22re and they want like $250 for it online. I didn't know they could expand the end like that at a mufler shop. I will definetly look into that this summer.
|
By the way, is that aluminum pipe? If it is you could polish it and it would look really sweet. I would like to make mine out of aluminum for that reason.
|
It's steel actually and wow! $250!...The whole mod cost me $10 plus another $20 or so if I get it powdercoated.

So... is that like 3" tubing flared to 3 1/4"? |
No, the deminsions are actually:
Length - 5.625" Diameter - ID - 2.5" Diameter - OD - 2.625" ~ 2.75” (Larger than 2.75” OD will be a tight squeeze.) Pipe is 14G Mild Steel. |
