I have a 3rd gen 4runner, running glassworks unlimited front fenders. the intake is inside pass side fender. well with the glassworks, its open and uncovered. i dont like the idea of sucking up water or other fluid into my intake. so fiberglass guys, what have you done as a solution to this problem??? looking for a fender liner or other solution, but i want to resolve this so its not a worry. any suggestions would be great!!! thanks guys

Would a k&n intake system help? I know k&n aren't the best, but some other intake system that doesn't use the box.

I don't have a 4runner, but that would make me worry a bit too.

Why not run it up somewhere other than the wheel well. Say back up through to the outer fender near the passenger antena side.

its part of the intake i believe k&n wouldnt do too much....still has the hole. and as far as a snorkel i've considered it but i dont wanna chop these fenders...anyone with glass works?? what did you do??

If you remove your airbox from the engine compartment, you can unbolt the elbow section and remove it from the fender well. Basically all the pieces seen in Boxes #4, #7 (and in your pics above)


When you do that you're left with something that looks like this


Then, if you're with familiar the deckplate mod, you might consider getting a deckplate that fits the circular opening that goes from the fender well to the engine compartment. (I didn't measure mine when I had everything apart, but I would guess 4" ID opening would be about what you'd be looking for). If you follow some of the same steps as indicated in doing a deckplate mod, you could make it so that you could open and close off the hole between the fender well and engine compartment by inserting/removing the deckplate. Then you could either go with an aftermarket style CAI (like a K&N or Airaid), or you could just simply do the deckplate mod on your standard airbox.

I'd probably try to find a cap I could use to attach/remove from the opening on the side of the airbox where it used to connect to the elbow if you decided to go the route of deckplating your stock airbox. This way you'd get a straight rush of air from the deckplate mod on the front of the box, and it wouldn't be trying to pull air from (2) seperate openings. Unless you wanted it to (hence keeping everything able to be opened or closed pending on your situation). A 4" black plastic sewer cap from lowes/home depot fits over that side piece fairly well. (just fyi)

this is what I did on my first gen to raise the air intake a bit
looks like you're already halfway there with your airbox snout


you could also make an inner fender shield out of a tractor trailer mudflap similar to this to keep wheel splash out of your intake

I know that BruceTs did some custom work with his fiberglass fenders...
