Fender Liner Removal? (if you like puzzles look inside)

How do I take out this fastener? Can't figure out any way but brute force when getting at the back of it is impossible

order up a bunch of new one's before taking out the liner, then simply break out the old ones. If you want to save them then get a few different pairs of needle nose pliers to push in the 2 tabs that keep them held in, It's a PTIA but I've done it.....

How did you break them though? They are pretty sturdy in relation to the fender liner, and are flush with the surface.

Agree with Bruce, just buy replacement ones.

I busted them open with a drill

If those little flanges push in you can slip a snug fitting closed end wrench over them. this will push the flanges in and you should be able to slip them right out. if those flanges are fixed and wont push back in i would just cut them out

4Runr:

When I removed mine, i drilled out two and then pinched the third one from the inside (because i had some hand room) and pulled it downwards. too much effort.

just drill them all out.

i can't rember the exact cost but i think they were under $2 each

I would think a door panel removal tool would do a nice job snapping these buggers out. They will probably break but how else are you gonna get the little biiatches out?

Those fasteners are $.75 or so at Toyota. Not bad at all in my opinion...

On mine the liner was stretchy enough to pull them around the head of the fastener without removing it, but that was on the 90.

Definately! Pull the liner over the head of the fastener carefully. Then you can get to the backside to push the tabs in and pull out the fasteners. Now you can re-attach the liner using the old fasteners. FREE is best! I do this on a daily basis, and haven't broke anything yet.

Talking Buy NEW ones!

I got mine for like $0.67/each at the dealer. I just cut them off with a pair of snips or drilled them out until they busted. Be a cheap skate and reuse them by stretching the liner over them to get it off and you've done just that, stretched the liner, which can't be fixed. Get off your wallet and buy a big bag of them at the dealer, they have loads and fix your fender well lining RIGHT, not half !

My $0.02

EDIT: OR just rip the fender well lining out and forget about it period. The big popcorn size bag behind the glass counter is only $335.

Get the new ones, I screwed around with mine trying to get them out in one piece and did more damage than it was worth, it was a royal PITA and a waste of time.

A big bag, ehh? I can already picture that popcorn sized bag under the glass at the parts counter for only $670.00

Yeah, looking at my new 97 tonight I'm thinking that on the 90 one of the previous owners must have streched 'em for me. They came right off on it, but on the 97 they'd take quite a bit of stretching.
