Extra key = $175, wtf?
Go the Maund Toyota here in ATX. They want 75 to cut a new key and 100 to program it. WTF? Instead I bought an $8 blank off ebay, and will have it cut by a locksmith and follow the instructions posted in another thread for programming.
I'll stay the hell away from that dealer. |
same thing happened to a friend of mine with his Ford Focus. seems like Toyota and other manufacturers discovered a new way to make LOTS of money off their customers. i've got a '98 4runner that doesn't use the expensive keys or have the security chip inside, one option might be to see if you could swap an older style ignition in your vehicle, might save you some dough down the road.

Yep, this is standard pricing for some guy to go out and press the locks and turn the key a few times.
I had the same thing happen so i also got 2 keys off ebay and programmed them myself. They work perfect and since they were so cheap i was able to hide one on the truck, just in case. Doing this has saved me a few times with other cars, now i don't have a car without it. |
They use a scan tool to program it at the dealer. And charge an hour labor.

All this whining over a key by a guy who has what appears to be 4 expensive vehicles? :hillbill:
:guitar: |
Yepper.......
Maund Bites and Champion can't even replace bearings. Go Figure. |
I'm just being a bitch.
Seriously though, I expect that treatment from a Porsche dealer, but from Toyota? C'mon! KdF, who do you use in town? I went to Brake Check; they seemed alright and did all the brakes for decent price. |
The toyota keys on the Limited 4Runners are programmed to the ECU. Im not sure that lock smith will be able to do squat with that key.
With the new lexus keys, no locksmith can make the keys work without programming them to the ECU....which means a trip to the dealer. Hope it works for you |

Yea, thats more what I was talking about. Once you either A. Change the locks or B. lose all the keys, it gets spendy
