electric fan thermostat

Ihave a flex-a-lite fan and I was wondering do I leave the thermostat jammed through the radiator like the previous owner had it or do I put it in the top hose? I've heard of the top hose thing before and was just wondering. Also what year Taurus fan fits in a 1990 V6 4runner? I think I want to change since I have now chopped through my second fan blade since I've owned the truck (4 months). Yes I plan on chopping down the bolts where the clutch fan used to be. Thanks in advance for the :help:

I have the thermostat jammed throught the radiator - it works just fine.

I did notice flex-a-lite has a hole on the shroud for the thermostat so I'll leave it through the radiator. I burnt out a relay this weekend though and my runner redlined for the fourth time since I bought it. That sucked I hate that it redlines. :bang:

I have mine in the upper hose. My old electric fan had the capillary jammed in the radiator vanes. Consequently, the an would stay on all the time. Now, with the capillary in the coolant, it only comes on when the coolant reaches a certain temperature. :bigok:

In one post I heard about the sensor in the coolant because the ambiant temp made the fan keep coming on. Also does anyone know the year of Taurus fan that will fit the 1990 V6 runner.

I'm half way through my fan installation (need to replace a broken bolt when the stores open tomorrow) but hadn't heard about putting the sensor in the hose. Is this just putting it inside the upper radiator before reassembly? I would think this would give a more accurate reading of the cooling system. Are there any drawbacks to doing it this way?

The popular Taurus fan that is used is the one from and early 90s Taurus with the 3.8L. I have one and have not had a chance to put on yet, should be doing it pretty soon though.

The Hayden/Imperial fan controller I got for my taurus fan specifically said not to insert it into the coolant or else "serious damage will result". I would assume some thermometers are designed for the coolant and some are designed to be stuck into the rad fins. The taurus fan can be found in any 88-95 taurus or mercury sable with the 3.8L. There will be 3 wires coming out of the motor and the motor is a flat pancake style. Search for a writeup by Rome the seafarinman for more info on the taurus fan.

My only question with installing the fan is how do you guys recommend I mount it?

One hole in the radiator and the taurus fan lines up so I used 1 bolt there. For the rest of the corners I used the cylindrical zip ties that Rome suggested.
