easy differential oil change
 

The only 75w90 oil I could find last night was made by Valvoline. Their bottles have a squirt lid, sorta like the old red ketchup bottles you might find at a truck stop....which makes it very easy to squirt right into the fill plug hole without a pump.

When I was done I rinsed one out with brake cleaner, dried and then used it to fill the transfer case too.

Works fast and slick...no pump needed.

Just curious why you would do this to the bottle?

So I could refill the bottle with Dextron III to put in the transfer case....just aim and squeeze.

Maybe the residual 75w90 wouldn't hurt anything but I wasn't sure so I wanted to be safe.

Oh, ok. I didnt know you were using Dextron III. I would have done the same thing. Good idea.

YOU PUT ATF IN THE TRANSFER CASE?!?!?!?

You should have put 1.1 quarts of 75W90 GEAR LUBE, NOT DEXTRON III in it!

I was just thinking the same thing, not Dextron III in the transfer case. I hope you didn't drive far.

What generation/year do you have? I guess that might make a difference, but in the 3rd gen's, I've always heard that 75W90 is what goes in the Transfer Case.

Just because ATF came out, doesn't necessarily meant that it SHOULD have been in there. Some kid at Jiffy-Screw may have done that. You never know unless you are the original owner and have overseen all work done to it.

Are you SURE that it says ATF Dextron III in the manual for the TRANSFER CASE???

Mine is a 2nd gen, '95 with 3.0.

I've read those guidelines before which is why I posted the question yesterday about it.

But since the books says use Dextron II and it was definitely ATF that came out when I drained it I figured that's what I better put back in :)

He's right guys. Some 4Runner's call for ATF in there. Hopefully its not a misprint in the book.

The 3.0 engine with an automatic does use ATF, I am running it in mine.

I was a little concerned about it myself because of the conflicting information available, but in the end I decided that the book and the existing fluid gave me enough confidence to stick with ATF. Glad that Corey is doing the same...that little question mark doesn't have to float around in the back of my mind anymore :)

If you carefully read the owner's manual, it will tell you that if you have a 5 speed manual transmission that uses 75W90 oil then your transfer case should also use 75W90 oil. Now if you have an automatic transmission that uses Dexron II or III then your transfer case should also use Dexron II or III. Dexron III is lighter than 75W90. Now you don't want to put 75W90 in a transfer case coupled to an automatic tranny. You are going to put heat stress on your tranny because the fluid you have in that transfer case is heavier than Dexron or vice versa when in 4WD. So a Dexron should be mated to a Dexron or 75W90 should be mated to 75W90. Did you get what I mean? Apple to an Apple.

I highly doubt there is any misprints in there....the liabilities are huge.

Ok, I'm thinking of replacing the fluid in my transmisson and transfer case. I've got the 5-spd with ADD. Now, Corey, it says that you put in 1.2 qts of fluid in the transfer case for manual trans with ADD, right? Does anyone know how much goes in the transmisson? Also, what weight and should I use dino or synthetic for the transfer case and transmission? Thanks
