Drum Brake Removal/Star Adjuster help 01 Taco 4wd 2.7

2001 Tacoma 4wd 2.7

broke a lug stud, having a really hard time getting drum off. at first I think it was just rusted to the axle flange but I beat it with a hammer (planning on replacing it) and now the lug studs have some play. But the drum still won't come off so I'm thinking it's the shoes.

I tried to push the star adjuster "up" ( clockwise as if standing at the front of the truck looking back) as per the 03 fsm but now the whole assembly is just completely stuck, save for the little play from the studs. I'm trying to turn it back the other way but with little success, the self-adjuster deal is very difficult to work with.

basically I'm wondering if anyone knows which way I need to turn the star adjuster, and if you have any tips for getting it to move.

I have seen this thread: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/r...juster-159981/ but there seems some contradictory info there and with the FSM, I'm looking for additional information if anyone has personal experience.

p.s. I tried the threaded screw trick on the front of the drum but they were so rusted that they stripped out immediately.

The brake shoes need to be released from putting pressure on the drum .

No doubt a groove in the drum holding the shoes

You need two tools one to hold the lock and one to turn the adjuster .

You want to shorten the over all length of the adjuster so the brake spring pulls the shoes away from the drum.

The correct direction is clockwise remember there is a right and left side

I hope your Emergency Brake is off.

No clockwise when your looking at the adjuster from the back of the backing plate .

I had two new adjusters that I looked at to double check the direction

thx for the help... nvr got the star adjuster to turn the way I needed it, looks like it's totally seized or something even with everything opened up.

ended up grinding the front of the drum off.

a day and a half later and the end of this stud repair is finally in sight.

These drums are normally very hard to get off. Redrilling and tapping the removal bolt holes for larger size bolts makes the most sense to me.

Once you have the new holes tapped, coat them with dielectric grease to protect them from rusting out again. Those holes are very important. Don't attempt to take off the drum with just one bolt... use bolts in both holes.

Have you tried a righteous whack with a BFH?

That did the trick for me..
