Driveshaft Component Compatibility
 

Getting the Tacoma ready for listing. There isn't a ton I'm going to do before selling it, but I don't want a long list of stuff that has to be done right away for it to be reliable.

I was greasing the driveshaft and found that the grease plug on the rear driveshaft slip yoke is gone. When I pump grease into that zerk, it just comes pouring out the end of the driveshaft. Yes, some people have pounded some sort of freeze plug or something into there and it's worked, sometimes. I thought I found a solution. There was a whole slip yoke assembly with the u-joint and flange for sale on eBay. Said it fit some crazy year range of like 20 years. Bought it. Would be a very, very easy swap.

Well it sort of was. Splines lined up no problem and it slid right into the driveshaft. But the flange is different. Bolt holes don't line up. Fastest option for me, since these parts are only available at junkyards and places online want to sell the entire driveshaft for $$, would be to take the u-joints out of both this new one and my old one, and swap the new slip yoke, with an intact grease plug, onto my old flange.

What I'm curious about, before starting to pound out u-joints, is how "universal" the slip yoke is. Obviously the flange is not universal. Does anyone know whether a different year slip yoke will bolt up to the same u-joint as my existing flange?
